There are several factors which make this product unique.

First the positives:

It's thicker than average bandannas so it should filter out more dust and particles.

The strap around the back is great if your knot comes undone or you like to keep it loose.

It's form fitting to the underside of your neck so you don't have open space below your mouth and nose to let in more particles.

The negative:

The metal nose guard on my set broke off. I didn't really play with it or adjust it more that a few initial times and the plastic button which keeps the metal clip in place broke off.

I discarded the metal strip and the product still works fine.

I gave it a 3 star rating because although it clearly offers more protection than a bandanna or scarf the price is a little high.

I have worn many Respro Masks while in India (lots of pollution, smoke, dust) I'm an asthmatic and was skeptical if this would work. This Bandana - if you could call it that, might look like one but it is really a marvel of technology - no i don't work for Respro. It is comfortable, and does not look like I am an alien, and works. Just take it off in rush hour in a big city and see for yourself. I wish more of the Black and Navy ones were easy to find.

I bought this to reduce the allergy issues I've been having. So far, works pretty well. The nose piece keeps the mask in place. I can't say for sure if it totally block out all pollen, but it's better than nothing.

I have used Bandannas doing yard work before. This is only a slight improvement over the common bandanna. It works only slightly better. Not worth the price.
