Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3 Less a story than an excuse to expound on different types of planes and helicopters, this paean to flying machines will resonate with young transportation lovers. Ellie and her brother travel to an air show in their dad's plane, where Ellie gets a ride in a stunt plane. The facts about helicopters, jet engines, and the Blue Angels are clumsily loaded into the text, but young airplane aficionados are unlikely to notice among the bold, busy illustrations and foldout pages. The oversize picture-book format and Neubecker's bright, carefully detailed cartoon illustrations combine to provide the expansive, exciting feel of an air show, and the artist makes use of multiple perspectives to show planes from every angle. From Booklist

This trip to an air show is in the same visual tradition as Richard Scarry's Great Big Air Book, although the text here is less inspired. Actor and pilot Williams' story follows a sister and brother, Ellie and Gill, as their father flies them to the show, gives them the grand tour, and surprises Ellie with a trip in a stunt plane. Both characters are familiar types: Gill is a “know-it-all” (“The B-17's engines had 4800 horsepower”), and Ellie is a determined go-getter who plans to become a pilot for the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels (“I could do that, and someday I will”). It's Neubecker's artwork that really shines here, beginning with the endpapers, which depict the control panel of a Piper plane. The large-scale, double-page spreads pack in interest, and the foldout which features almost two-dozen aircraft, from a 1916 Spad to a 2009 Boeing 787, provides enough detail for aviation buffs to pore over for hours. With different angles and perspectives, both aerial and terrestrial, the standout art makes this well worth the ride. Preschool-Grade 2. --Andrew Medlar

As a child of an Air Force pilot, the story reminds me of childhood trip to airshows and the the EAA convention in Oshkosh.

This is one book that any flight enthusiast should have for their child or grandchildren!!
My Husband is a pilot and in the aviation industry, he and all his friends say that this is the most accurate book on flight they have ever seen. The radio communication is excellently depicted and the details in the aircraft pictured show that this was done by very knowledgable people!! The colorful artwork just adds to it all. If you like flying, especially general aviation vs military or commercial aviation, this is the book to get. I highly recommend this one.

Artwork is great but too much aviation jargon makes the child confused. It is impossible to know every aviation term unless you are in the industry, so you end up making up things. Not a pleasant experience for the parent (minus one star). Children stop asking questions eventually but the artwork is so great that it still keeps them interested. If you can come up with alternative dialogues to eliminate the jargon, this could be a good buy.

My husband works in the aviation industry so I bought this for him to read to our son. He (dad) loved the illustrations and overall accuracy of this book so much, he encouraged me to buy another to give to a pilot friend with a young son. We think you will love it too!

I checked this book out from the library last week. My girls (ages 2 and 4) have requested it every day since. They love the illustrations, especially the expressions of the little girl during the plane ride! The fold-out spread of the airplanes is a favorite too. As a child of an Air Force pilot, the story reminds me of childhood trip to airshows and the the EAA convention in Oshkosh. We'll be buying this book for our collection for sure!
