4.0 out of 5 stars I Hate Basketball And Love The Movie
I'm a pretty well educated film goer--took film courses in college, read much, understand the vocabulary and history of film. AND I have a secret, forbidden list--a list of films I really love but critics didn't. Such gems as Gung Ho! (with Michael Keaton) and The Golden Child (Eddie Murphy) grace this list. Out with snobbery, in with fun I say!

They sent me a DVD that cannot be played in the US. Waited for over two weeks only to be VERY disappointed. Based on similar reviews listed here, I would recommend that Amazon.com not represent this vendor, unless they want to lose customers like myself, and continue to get bad reviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Hate Basketball And Love The Movie, November 25, 2001

The Air Up There is definitely on my list. I hate basketball--I'm bored by sports in general. But I love this movie. It makes me feel good. Kevin Bacon is at his brash and cocky best as an assistant coach for a Catholic college team which apparently is expected to win big. When his personal pride costs him the loss of a promising prospect, he journeys to Africa to recruit a VERY tall fellow he saw in a home movie from a priest doing Good Works out there. When the basketball prospect turns out to be a prince and some tribal rivalry and mining interests complicate matters, the brash assistant coach has to find out what really matters.

Cliched? Sure. Predictable. I hope to tell you. But I love it anyway. The acting is amiable, the characters fun, the setting just exotic enough, the writing sure-handed, the story uplifting, and I got excited watching the basketball sequences even though I hate the game.

So what can I tell you? We talk now about not letting terrorists run our lives. I say don't let critics run your life either. I watch this movie at least twice a year and feel a whole lot happier when it's over. Try it.

This movie proves that it doesn't matter where you are, if you have talent, someone will find it. I enjoyed this film a lot.

The really enjoyed the movie. Kevin bacon was great and so was the African actors. I have seen this movie about four times on our local cable network and I laugh as if it was the first time viewing it. The main reason I wanted to review this movie because I really enjoyed the soundtrack. The music on the soundtrack was especially good. I enjoyed the african songs, but I was not sure who sang them. I am looking to purchase this soundtrack but I could not find anyone selling it. I am really interested in the african lyrics or songs and I will really like to know who the artists are.

4.0 out of 5 stars Didn't fly quite as high as it could have, but it is good, December 16, 2001

Jimmy Dolan (Kevin Bacon), a basketball coach, isn't having that great of a start with finding skillful new players to be on his soon-to-be team at St. Joe's college. However, after seeing a video of an African basketball player who really has some hang time, Jimmy decides that he's getting up and taking a trip to Africa, in order to try and recruit this phenomenon.

But little does Jimmy know that the basketball player he sees in the film is next in line to become head of his tribe. Therefore, it probably won't be all that easy to get this overly skilled basketball player to go to America and play at St. Joe's.

"The Air Up There" is a good movie. Like it says on the box, it is "lots of fun." Kevin Bacon does a good job, and the movie never ceases to be entertaining. But, unfortunately for major basketball fans like me, there's just not quite enough basketball action included in the film. It's more of Kevin Bacon trying to fit into a new culture in order to impress his recruit, than it is about playing basketball.

But other than that, "The Air Up There" really is a good movie. If you like basketball films or just good movies, I recommend getting it.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Air Up There DVD, January 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Air Up There [Region 2] (DVD)
The DVD was as promised, brand new and wrapped. The only problem is that it will not play in my DVD player . . . on the screen it says:

Playback Prohibited by area limitations

on the very back of the case it says:

For all of your movie needs log onto thefilmfactory.co.uk

When I was looking for this DVD all of the others that I found were from the United Kingdom... which I know will not play in US DVD players.

On the very bottom of the description on the back of the case it says:

This DVD is not to be exported, resupplied or distributed by way of trade outside the EU...

I ordered a DVD from the vendor on August 15th. Although I was advised that the estimated delivery date was from Sept. 10 to Sept. 23 (surprising in itself, since I usually get orders pretty quickly when ordering from Amazon), the item arrived fairly quickly. However, I was shocked, disgusted, and angry when I tried to play it and kept getting an error message that said it wouldn't play in this region. It turns out that this is a U.K. DVD, which is Region 2, and the U.S. is Region 1. I did not know about region differences and THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT IN THE SELLER INFORMATION WHEN I PLACED THE ORDER. After the fact, when I looked at seller feedback and comments on the ad page, I saw that many other sellers had the same problem. I returned the DVD to the seller via UPS (which has confirmed delivery) and emailed the seller requesting a refund, but no response yet. Because of this experience, I will NEVER order from this vendor again.
