Typical Don Felder,
By "planitz3" (Granite City, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Airborne (Audio CD)
That's right it's typical Don Felder! Which of course means it's great! This entire album has the same flavor as one of the coolest rock songs ever. Don's big contribution to the Heavy Metal soundtrack "Heavy Metal(Takin' A Ride)" It truly reflects in such songs as " Bad Girls" which most Mtv fanatics from the Eighties would know the video featured Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong fame. Then there's the song "Never Surrender" which also features Kenny Loggins on vocals which makes the song sound very commercial but it's one of those that you'll continually hum just out of the blue. Most of the album has this flavor to it. I played the heck out of this tape when I had it and wore it out. Now it's on cd and I recommend it to anyone who collects cds. It's a must have!

Great Solo Flight For Eagles Guitarist,

AIRBORNE, the only solo album by Eagles guitarist Don Felder, is great. The songs are instantly hummable, and the grooves rock like sort of a West Coast blend of War and Grand Funk Railroad. It should be noted that this album includes "Never Surrender", which was also on the soundtrack to the film FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, one of THE coolest teen flicks ever. This album is an all-time classic that just gets better with time.

The Outcast Don.,

After reading about this album in Don's book, Heaven and Hell, I thought I would give it a listen. Don's own critique about this album is spot on. The album lacks punch, and a hit, but the overall feel is relaxed and the tunes have a way of growing on you. I'd say that this album is "good", but lacks anything "great" that will have you coming back over and over again. Buying this record won't break the bank so it is an easy way to end any curiosity you might have.
All in all it was nice to hear what Don was doing on his own while the Eagles toiled in their break-up period. Now that Don is permanently removed from the Eagles, perhaps he will get to writing and performing a new album with a more serious tone to it. I've seen Don performing live twice since he departed the Eagles and his live show is great, so I anxiously await his next venture. In the meantime, this becomes a dust collector that I listen to occasionally, just to see if I missed something the first few dozen times I heard it.

Stepping Out Of The Shadows,

Don Felder is an absolute underrated rock and roll legend. As a member of the Eagles, he is a 1998 inductee into the rock and roll hall of fame. He is also a New York Times best selling author of "Heaven and Hell: My Life With The Eagles", a book which chronicles his life before, during and after his tenure with the classic country rock band. If you were to line up all of the greatest guitar players in history, Don Felder would rank in the top five. In fact, he wrote the music for what is considered to be one of the greatest guitar songs of all time, "Hotel California". Just listen to the final guitar duel between Felder and the great Joe Walsh, and you will know what I'm talking about. After the Eagles broke up in 1980, Felder contributed the title track to the animated film "Heavy Metal". Three years later, he dropped his only solo LP to date, Airborne. Airborne is very much a product of its time. Very 80's. I have to say that if you don't like 80's style rock, you might not want to buy this album. This is not the Eagles, it's Don Felder. I can see why some would find that to be disappointing. I for one, love this album and if I wanted to hear a great Eagles album, I would listen to any of their music from the 1970's. What we have with Airborne is Don Felder stepping out of the shadows of the Eagles and giving us a very solid and fun 80's rock album. Even though none of these songs charted on the Billboard top 100, they are absolutely fun, catchy and cool. Felder produced this album and wrote most of the music and lyrics. The standouts for me are Bad Girls, Haywire, and Never Surrender (featuring Kenny Loggins). For fans of great 80's rock, you won't be disappointed. According to his official facebook page, Mr. Felder is currently working on an album which will be released soon. I look forward to hearing more from Don Felder in the future. He is one of the greats.

As for the earlier post, this is not an Eagles album, it is a Don Felder album, you nim rod, and it is great! I keep it in the car for those long road trips, it gives me time to get into the rythm of his awesome guitar.

I read Felder's book, so I felt compelled to pick up this CD. Aside from a few solid tracks, this is woefully dated and and lackluster. Only Eagles completists should contemplate paying for this CD

Not like an eagles album,
By
This review is from: Airborne (Audio CD)
If you have listened to a lot of eagles stuff, you'll notice a couple things. A. Don Felder is a HELL of a guitarists, and B. his vocals are mostly in the harmonies.
Airborne still has that really good guitar. But the guitar does not cut this album, after the first two minutes you'll realize that you really didn't care that there is great guitar. Felders underproduced sometimes pitchy vocals are somewhat annoying. The album is produced awfully and things simply aren't mixed well. There are no stand out songs and evrything sounds the same. There is a lot of synthetic instruments playing so the album is pretty dated. The album has it's moments, and I feel that most eagles fans would like adding this sick rarity almost inaccessible CD to you're collection, but this disc sounds nothing like the eagles and really has no point. |
