This album is winter, distilled to its essence and burned onto a disc. Kalaniemi is an extraordinary accordionist, playing a five-row button accordion with grace, power and exquisite phrasing - she's one of the central figures in the accordion pantheon and is one of the strongest players of Finnish folk music, both traditional and more modern, in the world today. She's joined by fiddler, professor and scholar of Swedish folk music Sven Ahlbäck, an extraordinarily expressive player and a master of his instrument and genre as well. The material is energetic and complex, the atmosphere of the recording spare and plain - there's no accompaniment to the two players, who need nothing more than what they each bring to the stage. It's two brilliant musicians playing beautiful music from very cold places. I couldn't survive a winter without it.
