Book Description

Motorbooks Workshop January 15, 2007
Airbrush painting is an art like any other, requiring talent and skill; but it is also a technology that, more than other art forms, calls for technical mastery of equipment used in the process. JoAnn Bortles, one of the top airbrush artists in the United States, has developed a teaching curriculum for mastering both the technology and techniques needed to be a successful airbrush artist-an approach that frees her students to develop their own airbrush art. How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques presents this curriculum in a logical, step-by-step fashion. Along with guiding readers through a series of projects, Bortles also provides all the knowledge needed for developing projects. Not only does her book explain what to do in a clear, easy-to-follow way, it explains why.

Book Description

JoAnn Bortles, one of the top airbrush artists in the United States, shares her curriculum for mastering both the technology and techniques needed to be a successful airbrush artist. In a linear, step-by-step fashion, Bortles guides you through a series of projects, and provides all the knowledge needed for developing projects of your own—along the way explaining not only what to do, but why. Unlike other books about airbrushing, this one is not confined to particular kinds of vehicles or surfaces; it covers all types of cars and motorcycles—any “canvas” the aspiring airbrush artist might choose to paint.

From the Back Cover

Whether you want to custom paint graphics on the hood of your hot rod, the tank of your motorcycle, a fine-art canvas, or a T-shirt, mastering the art of airbrushing is the key to bringing your vision to life.

Expert custom painter and author JoAnn Bortles takes the beginner through the first steps of becoming an airbrush artist with How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques. She starts by explaining how to choose and buy equipment, how to master strokes and air pressure, and the materials and accessories a painter will need. And when you’re ready to move on to portraits, metal effects, complex stencils, landscapes and more, Bortles gives you the tools to tackle more difficult projects.

Drawing on years of expertise and writing in a laidback style, JoAnn Bortles eases you into the world of airbrushing like no other instructor can. So if you’re intimidated by the thought of that first pull of the airbrush trigger, How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques is the place to start.

More About the Author

I starting painting custom cars and motorcycles in 1979. I had no previous experience and learned everything by trial and error. There were lots of errors. In fact there were times I wanted to quit and did, vowing never to paint another car or motorcycle. But somehow, I always came back to it.
After so many years of learning very hard lessons in the custom industry, it is very gratifiying to be able to pass those lessons onto others. In 2003 I had the opportunity to do so and accomplish one of my dreams. I was given the chance to work with Motorbooks Publishing and write my first book, "How to Custom Paint Your Motorcycle." I had always dreamed of being a writer. Since then I have had 6 books published, the latest being, "Advanced Airbrush techniques," and two of my books have been translated into Japanese.
In 2007 I was very proud to have myself and my work featured in Southern Living magazine. It was first time in the history of this lifestyle and design magazine, that they featured an individual who worked in the custom automotive and motorcycle industry. And also in 2007 NBC News came to my shop and filmed. This piece was shown on NBC's Today Show in July 2007 and can still be seen on MSNBC's Video website.
Another proud goal was having a car my company painted win one of PPG's 2006 Top 5 Most Outstanding Paint awards, appearing in their Vibrance product advertising in 2006. Our work has won a number of awards over the years including winning several championships.
I also work as a photo-journalist for some of the leading motorcycle magazines such as American Iron, which is the number one selling motorcycle magazine in the world. I am currently testing riding gear for Harley Davidson Motor Company, which will be a series of articles for Cycle Source magazine. And I enjoy interviewing other people in the industry and recently interviewed Kris Krome, winner of the AMD Metric Motorcycle World Championship, for Cycle Source.
Another lifelong goal was accomplished in 2004 when my own personal custom motorcycle was featured on the cover of Easyriders magazine, making me the first woman whose own motorcycle was on the cover in the history of this 38 yr old magazine.
The goal of my books, is to keep others from making the same mistakes I did. the way I see if, if I can do do. Then you can do it. I can teach almost anyone to custom paint.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a great buy!, January 19, 2007
By
This review is from: How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
I'll start off by saying I keep picking up this book over and over. The Troubleshooting chapter is so detailed. It covers nearly every problem I have ever had with an airbrush. I have other airbrush books and none of them have this much "fix it" info. That one chapter has saved me so much time and stress.
The rest of the book is great also. One of the learning chapters has a really fun exercise that was so easy but gave me really cool results.
The book is very easy to follow and the examples in the book can be applied to almost any airbrush project. She uses a common sense approach that takes away the complications that come up when I'm trying to learn a new technique.
And unlike my other airbrush books, it has lots of photos. The example chapters have many photos that cover each little step.
It also tells how to get great ideas to airbrush.
And I really appricated the way she also tells how to deal with how to not get discouraged when things go wrong. How to deal with the stress that comes from trying to be be artistic.
I have another of JoAnn's books and while I enjoyed that one, I like this one better.
It is also a large book with nearly 200 pages. I feel this book was a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Master Airbrush Painting Techniques, February 2, 2007
This review is from: How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
Very comprehensive. I felt the author was having a personal casual discussion with me about what I wanted to learn instead of just documenting technical information and techniques. Teaching painting techniques in writing must be a tough task, but I think the author did a good job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Airbrush/Custom Painting Book, July 7, 2007
This review is from: How to Master Airbrush Painting Techniques (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
This would have to be the best book I've read about custom painting and airbrushing on cars/bikes. The book is great for the beginner (like me) who wants to know about airbrushes, suitable paints, and the techniques to start creating a custom paint job.
