The brace is a bit uncomfortable but the result is immediate with less pain and the ability to stand up and go rather than stand up and ease into moving.

Within a few hours, the glue on the tape melts, the tape becomes loose and the cushions slide along the shell.

We bought the Aircast Air Stirrup ankle brace from a local dealer because we needed it immediatly. Products are returnable to him only with obvious manufacturing defects that our unit did not have. We think it met specifications which is why we are giving it a 1* rating.

The idea of using air for rigidity without weight is intriguing; unfortunately it seems to us that Aircast made serious design compromises to engineer out a few pennies that, given an MSRP in the $60. range, is absurd.

Specifically, the green air cushions are attached to the white outside shell with some sort of double-sided sticky tape! Within a few hours, the glue on the tape melts, the tape becomes loose and the cushions slide along the shell. Once the cushions become off-centered, the fit, which is reasonable at first, becomes uneven and the brace rubs and chafes the skin in more than one spot.

We contacted the manufacturer's customer service by email who replied that all product issues must be handled by the local vendor. The manufacturer will not accept returns by mail (we offered) and will not deal directly with retail customers.

Since the company doesn't seem to care about improving its product quality, neither do we.

1* as noted.

I'll preface this review by saying that I MAY have needed a smaller size--I ordered the "standard" size--I'm a women's size 8 wide shoe and a "big" girl, so the small seemed unlikely to fit. I do have quite narrow heels, but not freakishly so....it just didn't work for me.

I tried every way of adjusting the straps, I tried with the shoe and without the shoe, a sock under and a sock over, an ace wrap around the outside to pull it together more....frankly, the slippery plastic covering the air cells, combined with the fact that the lowest strap sits significantly ABOVE the ankle allowed my foot and ankle to twist all over the place inside this brace. I honestly got better support and more wobble restriction from a regular Ace wrap than with this--I finally ended up in this ridiculous walking-boot-cast thing, but I can walk around like a normal person without a cane or walker for the first time in six months.

The brace SEEMS like it should absolutely keep one's ankle from flexing sideways, but at least for me, that wasn't the case.

This product is sooo comfortable. The fit is great. It is better then using an ankle wrap. I do reccomend that it be worn with a sock to keep the plastic liner away from the skin

Was prescribed one recently for a rolled ankle. This is complicated to set up correctly but works well for certain situations. I would highly recommend loosely trying it on the other ankle before trying it on the injured ankle.

The ankle brace comes with 2 sides and 3 velcro straps: 1 for the heel and two for the ankle. First of all, make sure you have the correct size and side.

Next, I would recommend adjusting the heel strap first. This way you get the right "girth" or width of the ankle. This is probably the most important step. Then familiarize yourself with how the other two straps work. Try it on the good ankle first loosely, then apply to the injured one. If you've correctly sized it, it should provide good support in the first few days after the injury.

Pros: Highly adjustable.
Cons: Highly adjustable, a little bit of a learning curve.

I have an achilles tendon injury on one foot that doesn't seem that is ever going to pain-less. As a result of babying the one foot I am having problems with the other ankle. I supinate on both feet and the brace has already helped to improve keeping the ankles straight. Good shoes help also. The brace is a bit uncomfortable but the result is immediate with less pain and the ability to stand up and go rather than stand up and ease into moving. I will figure out a way to deal with the straps because the end result is what I was looking for. I think that the fix is in adding some extra padding or a wrap for the part of the leg that is braced.

My hubby has been using these refillable air bladders inside his custom-made ankle brace from Kaiser for last 3 yrs. They last about 9 months before needing replacement and since two air bladders come in each box, we've got like 18-20 months per box. The relief on buffer pressure points makes wearing the brace easy, and with the little straw to refill the air once in a while, they do stay comfortable right to the end.
