Book Description

0754618358 978-0754618355 August 2002
A comprehensive examination of the characteristics of the experienced captain. Each chapter begins with an appropriate and relevant anecdote that is analogous to the chapter's main theme. It then progresses to the chapter's main objective and finishes with a scenario that the reader must try to solve from a captain's perspective. Immediately following each of these scenarios, the reader is presented with a number of considerations that should be evaluated when solving the problem. The intent is to help the pilot practice thinking as a captain. Offering a wealth of practical guidance, this book is an ideal platform for pilots or indeed, anyone interested in how leadership and management skills are used to achieve excellence. The reader should gain important command skills and learn how to apply these skills to routine and unexpected situations, in the same way in which an experienced captain would.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped, October 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Aircraft Command Techniques: Gaining Leadership Skills to Fly the Left Seat (Paperback)
For the price, this book is very thin. It is not a training manual or even a guide. It seems to be written by an older pilot looking back over his career. I was looking for a book with more guidance. If you order this book you will be very surprised at how little it contains. It is more of a personal journey memoir. I have read and would strongly reccommend reading books by Barry Schiff - they seem to have more practical information and direction. I bought this book for my son and will be returning it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and interesting, December 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Aircraft Command Techniques: Gaining Leadership Skills to Fly the Left Seat (Paperback)
I am a senior flight student at a university and had to purchase this book for a class. Though I do not work in an airline, I found the book gave very practical, useful advice throughout. The book gave clear discussion of a number of pertinent topics including judgment skills, pilot responsibilities, CRM, communication, and human error. Many chapters include interesting accounts of real incidents or accidents that tie in well to the topic. Each chapter ends with a short scenario that ties in with the chapter topic and a short discussion of some options that I found really made me think about the topic.

Overall, I really liked the book and found it to be an easy read. I recommend it to aspiring captains and even those who just want to know more about a multi-crew cockpit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Read - Not As Described, July 21, 2006
This review is from: Aircraft Command Techniques: Gaining Leadership Skills to Fly the Left Seat (Paperback)
I have read the other two reviews and only agree with the first reviewer. I have been flying for 28 years as both a recreational pilot and a professional commercial airline pilot. I expected this book to be a guide and full of practical advise for my son who is in the middle of his career as a pilot. It is not. It is seriously over priced and over hyped. I agree there are much better books out there for advice and instruction. Do yourself a favor and try to get this from the library if you want to read it, do not spend the money.
