Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
For the reader unfamiliar with Profiles, they were a series of aircraft monographs published in Great Britain between 1964 and 1974. In all, 262 of these booklets were issued and they varied in length from 12 to 25 pages, contained a large number of photos (for their size), and were illustrated with color multi-view and profile paintings of the subject aircraft, which is, after all, what the name derives from. The series was published in both individual and bound volume formats and nowadays, with these books being long out-of-print and commanding fairly high prices individually, the bound volumes can afford significant economy. In this instance, Volume 5 is comprised of 24 parts representing a broad cross-section of aviation history, running from the World War I Hanriot HD-1 to the 1960's English Electric Lightning. In its 324 pages, the color paintings and photographic reproduction are excellent throughout; the photo's are almost exclusively b&w (though there were the odd color ones in a handful of booklets of the series)and the artwork was produced very competently-and to a very high standard for the time- by Peter Endsleigh Castle, Richard L. Ward, James Goulding, and several others. The text for each volume achieves a similar high standard in its scholarship and readability, as such notable authors as J. M. Bruce, Peter M. Bowers, and Rene Francillon were regular contributors to the series. Admittedly, some allowance should be made for the age of these publications as far as "state of the art" scholarship on relatively minor issues such as the correct Luftwaffe color identities, but aside from that, the reader will probably find this bound volume and the others a very convenient, heavily illustrated, and generally reliable reference source that has attained classic status and withstood the test of time.
