Book Description

"Danger, magic, romance, and royal intrigue, AIRE is a must read!"
—NYT Bestselling Author JESSICA ANDERSEN

"Looking for something fresh and new to read? Try Lena Goldfinch's AIRE." --SERENA CHASE, USA Today HEA

A tale of Legends reborn, royal intrigue, and an unforgettable, heart-melting romance that will sweep you away.

Annalisia is a seer, a princess with a courageous spirit—and a soft spot for Legends.

Jovanni is a Legend, a commoner with no patience for pampered royals.

Principessa Annalisia is stunned and conscience-stricken when an unknown enemy mistakenly abducts her maidservant. Determined to find the girl, Annalisia disguises herself as plain Anna and slips away from the palace. She tracks down Jovanni, her maidservant's daring older brother, and they soon begin to search together. As they uncover clues, Anna also discovers a kindred spirit in Jovanni. But would he be so free with her if he knew who she really was? Doubtful. Even so, she reveals her secret gift of visions to him, and in so doing disobeys the orders of her beloved grandmother, the queen.

With Jovanni, Anna can almost imagine she’s like any other seventeen year old girl, free to pursue the longings of her heart. When she learns that he also has a secret—he's a sentinel, an ancient shapeshifter who can take the form of a falcon—it seems as if they were destined to be together, as in the legends of il Sentiro. Though Anna is tempted to wish otherwise, she can’t forget that she’s a princess and it's her duty to marry another. Meanwhile, their hunt leads Anna ever closer to danger, for she herself is being hunted.

A princess and a commoner. They never should have fallen in love...but they did.

AIRE is a lush romantic fantasy, inspired by ancient Italy and Turkey.

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Aire by Lena Goldfinch is a historical fantasy that stars a young Italian princess named Anna, who has the power to see the future. This is a power she keeps hidden from everyone because others might not understand. Her hand in marriage is given to a suitor who she doesn't love, and in a burst of rebellion, she flees the dance that would announce this betrothal. As she flees, her boat is caught by mercenaries who mistake her clothmaiden for her. What happens next is a whirlwind of Anna trying to find her missing friend, falling in love for the first time, and learning how to think for herself.

The setting of this novel is beautiful-- we get the sense of the vastness and gorgeousness of Italian royalty. There is plenty of intrigue and plot twists. Anna is a good protagonist, and we also get to see in the head of the male protagonist, Jovanni. The supporting characters are strong, especially Ilan, one of her favorite servants. The last 20% of the novel moves at a quick pace and at that point, is hard to put down.

I did feel that the middle section dragged quite a bit, as we keep getting told that Anna and Jovanni are looking for the missing girl, and a lot of wandering takes place. I also wasn't a big fan of the Italian words that were plugged into the text to remind us she was in Italy-- but that's more a personal preference.

Overall, a beautifully written historical fantasy that introduces us to some great characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Startling Romance with Touches of Magic! April 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely loved this book--the sweeping romantic images, the magic, the lyrical prose, and the beautifully imagined characters that you find yourself falling for in the first chapter. Annalisia is a heroine with just the right amount of courage and doubt. Her romance with Jovanni is kept at bay like a long held breath with the perfect satisfaction of coming up for more "aire" I cannot wait for more from this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Adventure with Beautiful Details April 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I love everything about Aire. The characters are incredibly well thought out (Jovanni is my favorite--but I do seem to have a soft spot for falcons:-)), and the attention to detail is simply amazing. Shifting points of view add many twists and turns, and every thread of information intertwines seamlessly. The setting is beautiful, the voice is fabulous, the pacing is perfect, and it's just... WOW! Aire is a lovely romance safe to recommend for any age.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs More Depth, But I Still Liked It July 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Please note, I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest review through the group, Never Too Old For Y.A. & N.A. Books. Ultimately, I got the book for free via a Smashwords code from the author. This in no way effects my final review of this book.

I liked it well enough, but felt that there could have been a little more depth with the characters.

You mostly follow Annalisia and Jovanni. Annalisia is a princess, who is also a seer. When she touches certain objects that were of importance to someone, she sometimes is able to see what is happening to that person. Or sometimes she just has a vision on her own. After Anna leaves her betrothed at a party and insists upon going home across the water, her boat is attacked. During the attack, her maidservant, Mira, is mistaken for the princess and abducted.

Anna, who feels guilty that Mira was taken instead of her, sets out to find her friend and maidservant. During the search she ends up teaming up with Jovanni, a commoner and Mira's brother. Things get even more intense when one of Anna's sisters is abducted and a few more attempts are made to abduct Anna. It would seem that someone is trying to disrupt the proposed alliance between two kingdoms.

During the course of the search Anna and Jovanni fall in love? But they can't be together or can they? Apparently there is a legend of a princess marrying a sentinel. Which Jovanni apparently is.

I feel that the basic parts of a good story are all here, but overall, I felt like the story was lacking depth. I felt there could have been more trials for the couple during the search or more interactions. Too me it almost seemed like at some point the author just told me they were in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing, heart-wrenching, and yet delicious tale!! :) September 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Aire was brilliant, just brilliant. It captured such a wealth of emotions, such depth of feeling! The characters were superb, the setting lush, the plot riveting. Harrowing, heart-wrenching, and yet delicious, this is not a tale I will soon forget!
Within the beautiful, royal palace, we are introduced to Princess Annalisia, a legendary seer, destined to spend her life hiding her gift and calling a man she doesn't love 'husband'. But she goes along with her grandmother, the queen's, doings; as do her older sisters, Helena and Liliana. Until her faithful maid is abducted. From there, strange things happen at an alarmingly rate. Things Annalisia could never have perceived. Things like meeting her maid's brother, Jovanni, and escaping the castle walls dressed as a washerwoman, things like finding out she's not the only legend, and falling in love... But in the midst of all this adventurous, frightening chaos, will the princess find a way to true love, or will she be destined to a marriage of duty?
* Sigh* I was captivated. The characters. The feeling. I don't know, you just have to read it to know how splendid of a tale it was. With just the right amount of suspense, danger, and action, Aire also took my breath away with its portrayal of the beauty of love. The host of characters charmed their way into my heart, even as they charmed each other. Annalisia, Jovanni, Ilan, Geminia, (and many more, I'm just not sure how to spell their names! lol)... it was beautiful! The emotion of this story tugged at my heart... non-romantic relationships very much included... it held scenes that made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. So sweet. You must read Aire for the emotional depth if nothing else, :).
But it wasn't all romantic and sweet emotions.

While you're waiting for Book 2 in The Brides series....If you liked THE UNEXPECTED BRIDE and enjoy a sweet, spiritual heart-stirring romance, consider giving AIRE or THE LANGUAGE Of SOULS a try! If you also have a bit of an adventurous side--and enjoy tropical breezes, a spunky heroine and fearless hero, and the smell of coconuts--you may like my fantasy romance SONGSTONE.

* Readers of Inspirational romance and sweet historical romance seem to particularly enjoy THE LANGUAGE OF SOULS. If you've enjoyed THE LANGUAGE OF SOULS and don't typically read young adult books, you may like AIRE and that would be a good next book to read.

* SONGSTONE is a romantic, lyrical island fantasy novel, but please note that it does touch on some darker subjects, such as abuse--even so, the overall tone of the book is redemptive, with a positive focus on overcoming the odds.

* HAUNTING JOY is a short, breezy contemporary YA novel with a sweet teen romance and light (as in NOT dark and scary) ghostly elements. Maybe THE GHOST WHISPERER for teens?
