About the Book--
Much has changed since the first edition of this book was published in 1997, and especially subsequent to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In the first decade of the New Millennium, the airlines are in a tailspin and struggling to recover from the worst economic crisis in their history. The trauma was brought on by a series of setbacks that began with airline deregulation, followed by a rash of consumer complaints and safety concerns, constrained airport capacity resulting in inordinate traffic delays, economic recessions and spikes inoil prices, two wars in the Middle East, and topped off by acts of terrorism around the world and a system now constrained by heightened alert and enhanced security procedures.
This book is a companion voulume in an Air Transport Series, comprised of Air Transportation: Foundations for the 21st Century and Airline Management: Strategies for the 21st Century. Together, these two volumes take readers through the dark ages and monumental losses suffered collectively by the airlines since deregulation, and into the possibility of an economic reformation and the return of profitability. Suggested are trends and strategies, that if followed might lead to a renaissance of consistent profitability for the airlines, stable employment for labor, and continuous, reliable and fairly priced air services for consumers.
It is the purpose of this series to acquaint the reader with the principal elements of air transportation history, airline economics, business, finance, marketing, regulation, and management--to bring all the essentail elements of commercial aviation within the two-volume series. We hope that, together, the Air Transport Series will continue to be a solid reference for airline and aviation management, and fundamental texts for courses in air transportation, airline and aviation management, business, law, and economics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A commendable introduction to the airline industry, July 1, 2001
By
Pierre Weydert (Zurich, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Airline Management, Strategies for the 21st Century (Hardcover)
This is the first academic book on the airline industry that I read and I still consider it the most readable one. However, as other reviewers have correctly pointed out, the book's title is blatantly misleading: This is by no means a manual delineating airline strategies for the 21st century but rather a thorough introduction to the airline industry and to the U.S. airline industry in particular. Apart from the odd subtitle, though, the book does live up to the expectations by brilliantly explaining the basics of airline management, and some chapters - especially the ones on airline economics, planning and price - are written so well and are so easy to understand that I would like to recommend Mr Dempsey and Mr Gesell's work to any student aiming to make himself familiar with the peculiarities of the airline industry.

Still, there are two minor omissions in this book that deserve to be noted. Firstly, the book having been published in 1997 only scarce mention is being made of the internet's role as a competitive tool used to enhance direct distribution within the industry; considering that nowadays more and more airlines are relying on internet technology in order to contain their operating costs, this is a point that truly needs to be updated. Secondly - and as has already been pointed out - the book's industry analysis focusses on the situation in the U.S., thus for the most part leaving aside the European and Asian markets where the airline industry tends to be heavily regulated and where the challenges airline managers are up against can be very different from the ones in the U.S.

All in all, however, this book offers a detailed and surprisingly readable introduction to the airline industry, and anybody who as yet has not read anything on the subject will not be disappointed in choosing the work by Mr Dempsey and Mr Gesell.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Aviation Professional!, May 13, 2001
By
Janet Dyer (Salt Lake City, UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Airline Management, Strategies for the 21st Century (Hardcover)
This book went into great detail regarding the economics, finance, and other managerial perspectives of the airline industry. Included were several helpful tables, graphs and statistics. This book complemented an airline operations course I recently completed at college, within an aviation management program. This book serves as a great reference and will not collect dust on my shelf! Dempsey exhibits remarkable expertise throughout the chapters in this book. Anyone planning on going into any kind of aviation career should read this to remain knowledgeable of current situations within the airline industry. Overall, this has been the best aviation textbook I've read throughout my undergraduate training.

This review is from: Airline Management, Strategies for the 21st Century (Hardcover)
This book gives an excellent introduction to the airline industry and specifically, airline management. Anyone working in airline management should read this book. Interesting readings on airline economics, finance, planning, marketing, operations, prices, promotions, etc. I have already read it twice and recommend it to everyone in the business or into economics and the industry. I hope Mr. Dempsey comes out with another one soon!
