Book Description

March 2002
A master of Russian seascape painting, Aivazovsky claimed to have painted nearly 6,000 pictures; it can be said however, that there are far more 'Aivazovskys' in international collections and auction houses. A complete catalogue raisonne of the artist's works is a virtually impossible task, owing to the sheer quantity of the pictures and the complex nature of the attribution tasks. It is difficult to find another figure in the history of Russian art enjoying quite the same popularity among amateur viewers, refined connoisseurs and erudite professionals. He did not experience any creative rises or falls; no dramatic twists in his artistic fate and no discernable evolutionary changes in his technique. Aivazovsky was never haunted by failures, afflicted by official disfavour, vexed by captious critics or distressed by public indifference. Aivazovsky's name was, and still is, well known to one and all. His oeuvre is one of the brightest and most original phenomenon in the history of the world artistic culture, comparable to the equally unique phenomenon of J.M.W. Turner. The great English landscape painter met Aivazovsky in Italy and wrote a heartfelt poem in Italian to his Russian colleague, calling his creations "powerful and beautiful art inspired by genius." The works featured in this volume are some of Aivazovsky's most representative. They are the subject of a small showing in and around St Petersburg and reflect the most important features of the candid, comprehensible, thrilling and enigmatic art of Hovhannes Aivazovsky - one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Russian and world artistic culture.
