Great for pop, rock and disco--DO NOT BUY for classical,
By Paul Hickey (Fairfax, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aiwa NSX-A909 Compact Stereo System (Electronics)
This unit really lends itself to synthesizer-based music, but forget about listening happily to classical music, including opera. The brass section sounds tinny and the strings hollow, and no matter what equalizer setting I put it on, nothing helps. Fortunately, my eclectic tastes in music leave me plenty of satisfactory options, but classical CDs truly sound better on my Magnavox boombox than on this thing. It does, however, look nice on a shelf, plus you're not commited to the speakers since you can plug other kinds in, unlike some mini-systems.

BEST IN THE WORLD FOR THIS PRICE!!,

This minisystem REALLY outperforms the rest! I just got mine about three weeks from now and I'm very pleased with the way the speakers sound. Consisting of a 4-way speaker system (Tweeter, Midrange, Woofer, and a Subwoofer), this baby cranks out a total of 220 watts(30watts per main speaker and 80 watts per sub). The highs are just right, and the low frequencies are reproduced very acurrately with lots of power. In addition, it has a three disc cd changer(able to change two while one's playing), dual cassette with the "TMS" feature from the Acura head decks, a karaoke and mic mixing system along with a jog dial. Also, there's a built in equalizer and a digital sound processor, which allows you to delay the audio signals before it reaches the speakers by milliseconds-thus creating an echoing effect. The equalizer also allows you to customize the frequency ranges you want to emphasize on (Example: you can add more on the bass and cut back on the highs if the music itself is robbed from low frequencies). And last but not least, the best part about this system is that you can listen to external sources through the Video/Aux input! This system is a definite buy for enthusiasts who want excellent sound reproduction for under 500 bucks. It's only drawback is that the housing of the dual 8" subwoofers affects the bass waves--you hear it best when you sit away 5 feet+ and in front of them. The instant you walk to the side or leave the room, the bass seems to have disappeared". But compared to other systems, this one is definetly the REAL THING!!!!

I just purchased one of these units and I'm surprised to say it, but I have no regrets. I had never even heard of the Aiwa name before last week, which just goes to show you how much I know about stereos. But I must say, since I made the buy, the quality of sound, ease of use, and sheer good looks of this unit have made me a devoted follower. Compact, simple, sleek and classy, this unit has it all. Unlike a lot of plastic crap that comes out nowadays, this one looks like it will last, blasting forth waves of solid sound well past warranty expiration. I feel good about recommending this brand and this unit. I hope you have as much good luck with your purchase as I have with mine!

I totally LOVE my new stereo. Not only did it arrive at my house super fast, the owner's manual made it incredibly easy to set up the system. The sound output is great, I have no complaints. I haven't been able to figure out how to make the dimmer on the display work yet, doesn't seem to do anything when I follow the instructions in the manual. Still, even if that feature never works, I'd buy this baby again in a second. I seriously doubt I would've found such a great deal at a store, and in fact some friends bought the same unit for $150 more. I was hesitant buying a stereo system online, but the candid customer reviews made it less intimidating, and I'm grateful for that extra service that Amazon.com has here. Thanks so much you guys!

**This is the best deal you will find**,

I did a serious amount of homework before buying this stereo. I looked at nearly every online retailer and Amazon was the cheapest by about 40 dollars minimum. I also looked at the AIWA NSX-A888, but it only has 200 watts. The A909 has 20 more and it really makes a differece. The overall sound quality is better than the A888 too. This system is great for rock and anything that you want to listen to with Bass. I have what could be the loudest stereo in my dorm now. Rest assured that if you buy this stereo, you will not be disappointed.

I cannot believe that AIWA is gone.,
This review is from: Aiwa NSX-A909 Compact Stereo System (Electronics)
I was browsing the electronics section at my local Goodwill and I saw this dusty mini system on the shelf, less the remote. I plugged it in to try it out, and I was simply amazed with the quality of sound and the emphasis of the bass notes this mini system produced compared to even the expensive BOSE Acoutic Wave music systems.. Despite the fact the cassette decks were not working, I decided to buy it because the $20 I paid was a small sacrifice for the BIG sound and the busted cassette decks. So, I took it home, cleaned it up, and now I have a system for my dorm that blows the others away! But, I don't understand why a company, such as AIWA, that made such great products took such a wrong turn and got bought up by SONY, then liquidated. I'd put my old NSXA909 against SONY's top-of-the line Muteki mini-systems any day. They don't make 'em like they used to, I guess [or not at all, anymore].
