Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The Akai DVDS3500 multiformat progressive-scan DVD player will become a valuable player in your home entertainment center. In addition to DVD movie and CD audio discs, the DVDS3500 is compatible with VCDs, CD-R/RW discs burned with either CD audio or MP3 digital audio files, and HDCDs. It supports discs with up to 8 sound tracks and up to 32 subtitles, and it offers 10-bit video decoding and dual-channel Dolby downmixing. Other features include selectable screen aspect ratio (4:3 and 16:9), multi-angle viewing, PAL/NTSC playback, and parental lock function. The DVDS3500 offers the following connections: composite A/V, S-video, and component-video (Y, Cb, cr) outputs.

Tech Talk

  • Progressive scan: Also called sequential scanning, a progressive-scan system displays the entire image--providing all the horizontal lines per frame, rather than every other line--once every 60th of a second. This method reduces flicker and increases stability. Progressive-scan viewing requires a compatible digital TV.
  • Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.
  • Component video: Unlike a single video input, component video maintains the video signal as three separate signals through three jacks. This connection provides optimum quality. To ensure maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the Y, Pb, and Pr connections.
  • VCD: Video CD (VCD) is a video standard that can store audio and video to a compact disc (rather than a DVD disc) using MPEG-1 compression. You can fit up to 74 minutes of video with audio onto a VCD-formatted CD, but you can expect the video quality to be similar to that of a VHS videotape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Built to Last!!!!, August 11, 2004
This review is from: Akai DVDS3500P Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
This is a very nice unit. I bought it for the bedroom and it ended up replacing the Sony unit in my family room. I use it every day and the Progressive scan makes all the picture difference in the world. Do yourself a favor and pick this unit over the no-name brands.

1.0 out of 5 stars This DVD player stinks!, January 3, 2005

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Akai DVDS3500P Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
This DVD player is a big disappointment. First off, when you eject a DVD, the tray does not even clear the roof of the player the entire way, so if you have a 2 sided DVD, the top of it gets all scratched, and since they have yet to develop a scratch resistant DVD this is a very bad thing. Secondly, you can't even turn off the power with the remote, you have to use a manual button on the player itself that looks like it's from the '80s. [...] I'd highly suggest moving on to the next DVD player on your list.

1.0 out of 5 stars quality is a problem!, October 20, 2004
This review is from: Akai DVDS3500P Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
This device is just lasting about a month, then video output is a problem. Usually products Amazon carrying are OK level for quality, but this is first time I had a bad experience.
