1.0 out of 5 stars Non-existant warranty service at Akai
The reason I gave this a one-star is that there's no check box with zero or minus ratings.

The reason I gave this a one-star is that there's no check box with zero or minus ratings.

I have a 42" plasma Akai and have been waiting two months for a warranty repair, with no resolution in sight. The "service" number in the Akai manual connects you with seems not to be tech-support at all, but an answering service in Ohio. (The corporate HQ is in California!) The "associate" who answers the phone tells you that, "...they will pass your problem along." They also tell you not to expect any action for over a month because they have to do "research" on finding someone in your area to fix your TV. A month or more to look up "TV repair" in the phone book. Right!

When you ask for a name of somebody who is empowered to make decisions at the company, you get the dodge, "We're just an answering service." No phone numbers. No last names. They evidently got off the dime when, on the third phone call, I threatened legal action, after a month of being ignored. But I still can't talk to anyone at Akai to find out the problem or who's in charge. Zero, zero, zero in the feedback dept. Customer service at Akai borders on criminal negligence. Nobody is home.

Six weeks after my first call, a local repair person called me and showed up a week later. Akai really must have done that "research", because he reflects their corporate culture--he doesn't return my phone calls. I suspect they just picked the cheapest service and now are dragging their feet on providing the part. But I don't know. He hasn't gotten back to me for over a week. But at least with him I can personally go to his physical location to find out what's going on.

If you think you can solve this problem by getting an independent warranty, think again. Your contractor still has to deal with the coorporate black hole at Akai to get the part...

1.0 out of 5 stars Never buy Anything from Akai. There customer service abysmal, June 19, 2008

This review is from: Akai PDP4273M 42" Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
Simlar to other reviews. My set starting loosing color after about 10 months. It took a month to get an authorized service center, another month for them to tell me it wasn't repairable now we are in Monthy 7 and still trying to get a commitment to getting a replacement TV shipped to me. These guys are crooks. Don't buy anything no matter with their logo on it no matter how great it might look.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warranty work nightmare, January 9, 2008

Well the 42" Plasma was great until 11 months later the picture went out and we only have sound. I have been in contact with AKAI for warranty work and have been very dissatisfied. I contacted them on the day it occurred and as of today, a month later, I still have a broken Television sitting in my living room with no plan of action. I was told by two different customer service representatives that if a service center could not be found in 14 business days that I would be issued an RMA# and would be able to exchange it where I purchased it. I called again last night (because no one has called, emailed, or any other form of communication) and was told that it was 30 business days? Even though I have been pleased with the TV prior to it going out, I can't with good conscience recommend AKAI to others looking to purchase electronics. I place great value in knowing that the company I purchase from has the integrity to stand by their product and will make things right when their product fails. Akai has little value in this department thus far.

We Just got this from Sam's Club...$999
Along with a a New DVD player with UpConvert and an HDMI cable
Hooked it up in less than an Hour and loaded a DVD....WOW!
Image quality is Fantastic!...We sat and watched all the Harry Potter movies
in wide screen...
We went from a 36" regular TV to this...wide screen movies on the old tv were no more than 28"...this thing is a minimum veiwing area of 38" and most of the movies popped up at the full 42"...(you gotta see the Disney Movie "CARS" on a plasma 42...just incredible)...I'm not a TV Techie but studied enough to know that I needed Plasma (better for Movies)...and not LCD (better for HD cable and watching Sports)...Image quality is VERY similar anyway...

All you really need now-a-days is a DVD player with UpConvert that has an HDMI output (highest quality signal output from your DVD player)...and the quality is really fantastic...

Even Wal-Mart has DVD players with UpConvert...and the cables and plasma/LCD tv's......

So anyway we are Very Happy with this Not so Familiar Brand Plasma TV and can tell you to purchase it with confidence!

I hope this helps for people that pass this TV in the stores...and wonder

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent low cost plasma screen, January 1, 2010
By
This review is from: Akai PDP4273M 42" Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
Bought this TV ~4 years ago and subsequently other flat screens for different rooms in the house. The AKAI really stands out with the best picture quality of any of my screens. Excellent contrast and crisp 1080i images when connected to digital HD cable. Great buy overall and looks great too!

Biggest complaint is the remote control which is not compatible with my cable universal remote control.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Value for a Great TV, October 12, 2007
This review is from: Akai PDP4273M 42" Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
This tv is perfect for someone who wants to save a little on money and still get a good plasma tv. The only drawbacks that I have found so far is that there is only 1 hdmi connection and the remote is very basic. The picture quality is outstanding for 1080i/720p and it is very sharp from any distance or viewing angle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV for the price!, April 5, 2009

This review is from: Akai PDP4273M 42" Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
I bought this TV from Price Club about 2 years ago and I still love it! The Picture is brighter and clearer than most LCD TV's I have seen to date, I also own a 47" LG 1080P LCD TV, and honestly this TV looks better for most material.

I have had no reliability issues with this TV whatsoever, it has performed flawlessly for over 2 years now, and I abuse it daily with Blu Ray movies and Xbox 360 games... excellent TV ~

I bought this HDTV monitor over a year ago and I have been very happy with the quality. Never saw any problem yet and the price was great. The remote is bit too low-key but for the price its not bad.

Compared to other HDTV monitors i guess this is a bit heavy so i prefer to keep it on a table compared to mounting on the wall.
