This record knocked me out. I first heard of these women on the Hold Up The Sky series of women singers. This release reflects a wide variety of influences on their music. They even do a 'rap' type song that is great. Get this at all costs, this is land speed record type stuff if you git my drift. I am currently trying to find their earlier stuff on the internet.

best okinawan contemporary group singers,
This review is from: Akemodoro Unai (Audio CD)
Am I the only one out there in cyberwhatchamacallit, who loves the musical wonders the four "sisters" (nenes) who sing with the most graceful simplicity a sound that will follow you long after their silence. Let's get rid of tower record-bin classification of "world" music and listen to this music simply for what it is in its compulsive and infectious beauty, rocking you never a beat faster than a bambou in a soft breeze. The voices, in a vague but everpresent Chinese way to modulate and ululate bring thousands of years of refined singing that eases the soul, humors, tempers and other emotional repairments. In an other cd (ashibi), nenes bring Bob Marley "No Woman No Cry" to the song of four godesses lamenting the fate of men and women. By the way, the cd-notes say that Bob Marley was very fond of Okinawa music. No wonder. The music throws a wide net over the South Pacific of various influences, but, like tango is purely argentinian through its extraneous elements, okinawa is like no other and immediately recognizable, after very few times. If I can use this forum to post a call to anyone who wants to particpate in a performance/cd/web presentation of an okinawa music-based project, all are welcome. This includes singing, dancing, web design and party promotion. I'll explain. Sayonara. Yves Seban
