Product Description

ALL AKITIO PRODUCTS CARRY A TWO YEAR WARRANTY. Akitio Thunder Dock The ThunderboltTM dock links past, present and future technology to your computer with just one ThunderboltTM cable. The Thunder Dock allows you to access your data on both legacy and future storage drives by providing multiple host ports for USB 3.0, eSATA and FireWire 800. It also has two Thunderbolt ports for daisy chaining additional Thunderbolt devices and storage. USB 3.0 supporting UASP FireWire with bus-power (7W) eSATA storage (6Gbps) ThunderboltTM I/O ThunderboltTM is a revolutionary connection technology that simultaneously supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. ThunderboltTM I/O technology gives you two channels on the same connector with 10 Gbps of throughput in both directions. That makes ThunderboltTM extremely fast and flexible. In comparison, it is up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than FireWire 800. Thunder Dock One ThunderboltTM cable to connect them all. Simply connect the dock to your computer with just one cable and get instant access to all the additional storage drives that are hooked up to the dock. The lighting fast ThunderboltTM interface guarantees that you can achieve the best possible data transfer rates. ThunderboltTM Daisy Chain Storage & Display The second ThunderboltTM port allows you to connect up to 5 additional ThunderboltTM devices (storage or display) in a daisy chain. Bus-Powered USB Ports (10W). Independent eSATA controllers. Two independent eSATA controllers guarantee that the performance doesn't drop, when a second eSATA storage device is connected at the same time. Note: The maximum transfer rate of the eSATA interface is about 370MB/s. NOTE : Due to proprietary software used in DROBO products, they often do not work properly with our Thunder Dock . Does seem to get a bit hot, but performs well.

I have it connected to my MacBook Pro and driving a Cinema display, USB devices, a firewire audio interface and, my favorite, a StarTech dual eSata drive bay.

Just wished it had more thunderbolt ports, USB ports, and an ethernet port, but I love it!!

I had ordered the Sonnet Pro Thunderbolt hub back in Dec, but its release date was pushed to sometime in the summer of 2014. So I started looking for some type of replacement. The Akitio was over half the price of the Sonnet and was available. I know Sonnet delayed their release of their box because they wanted to reengineer it for Thunderbolt 2--but here's the thing: for my use, I needed a hub that allowed me to feed a variety of interfaces that lived on my edit desk. The video files that come in from the field can be on different (interfaces) drives. Right now I have a project that had three field drives: Esata, Firewire, and Thunderbolt. If I didn't have the Akitio dock; I would have had to reach around and plug into the Mac Pro (which is not in a convenient place) with a Firewire adapter, and forget Esata; because the new Mac Pro doesn't accept it. So the Akitio makes it easy. Okay it won't have a Blu-ray or internal storage like the Sonnet, but heck; the Estata inputs work great with my outboard Blu-ray and dozens of other Esata drives that can't take the advantage of Thunderbolt speeds anyways. My only grip is that I wish it was designed more like a bar: all of its inputs on the same side and the power and output Thunderbolt on the back side.

Hooked up to a 2011 MacMini, which was a transition machine that has Thunderbolt but only usb2. This gives me 2 esata and 2 usb3 ports plus an extra FW800. Port multiplier works well with a Mediasonic ProBox 4 bay under both esata and usb3. 2 drives are in a software RAID 0, the other two are independent. Also see both drives in my Thermaltake BlacX Duet under esata. Does seem to get a bit hot, but performs well.

I bought this to go with my new 2013 MacPro. I had two major problems with the Akitio Thunder Dock. 1. if the computer goes to sleep it will not reconnect to eSata connected drives. 2. If the computer goes to sleep the log files will spew with Firewire bus errors, and I mean a lot of them. To Akitio's credit their customer service is very responsive and offered to RMA to fix the firewire problem. But, if you look around, they have known about this problem for a while, and new products being sold still have the problem. For both of these reasons I have just returned it and will just replace my eSata enclosures with something else.

What a great product the Akitio Thunder Dock is for MacBook Pro owners. I have a Apple ThunderBolt display, and a ASUS PB278Q 27-Inch WQHD LED-lit PLS Professional Graphics Monitor and wanted to use both monitors at the same resolution of 2560x1440 so everything would be same size on both monitors. Plus I wanted just two connections on my MacBook Pro, power and Thunderbolt connection when docked. The Akito Thunder Dock made this possible. I just connect the Apple ThunderBolt Display to MacBookPro via built in power and ThunderBolt connections. Connect the Akito Thunder Dock to the Apple ThunderBolt display's extra ThunderBolt port and the Asus PB278Q 27-Inch to the Akito Thunder Dock's ThunderBolt port.
Wow! 54 inches of 2560x1440 resolution and the added bonus of USB 3.0 ports, Firewire 800 port, and Two eSATA host ports (up to 6Gb/s). All this with just two connections on my MacBook Pro. :)

I ordered Akitio Thunder dock primarilly to connect my esata devices that I had from my PC. It works great so far....the only worry I have is that it's too hot all the time.
I work with Red camera, and tranfering the files from card reader on esata is very fast!
Also its good for connecting additional usb 3 devices as Mac Pro has only 1 bus for 4 usb 3 connections.
Few days ago...friend brought me his firewire 800 external hdd...so I used Akitio dock to connect it ;)
Works flawlessly!
I highly reccomend it!

thunderbolt display, thunderbolt to thunder dock, one usb3 5TB disk, 1 usb mouse ... Only 50% of the attachment used, yet the heat coming off the device is ridiculous. It's on very cold surface M3 docking station on the bottom on top of the metal aluminum piece... Yet the heat coming off this thing is not dissipating. It gets so hot!.... beware, you will need a dedicated fan to cool this thing off... On top of the that, my mac air is constantly over heating since I have attached it. I am not liking it one bit!

Greetings,

I use one at my theatre office and I am disappointed it does not have an ethernet port, like the Belkin. The Akitio doesn't either, nor does it do audio. I like the breadth of the Belkin. But it gets hot and we know heat stress is the number one cause of electronic component failure. Cool the device (65ish is best Fahrenheit) adds significant life to a device, but we can't get them that cold unless in a machine controlled room.

This guy runs hot w/o adequate heat dissipation, in my estimation. But I have a replacement coming, since mine failed and the performance has been above average, so I stay.

The other two leaders have issues too. Pick your pain.

Brian D.
