About the Author

James O'Brien, who holds a B.A. and M.A. in English, received his Ph.D. in Japanese from Indiana University in 1969. He taught at the University of Wisconsin from 1968 until his retirement in 2003. In addition to his work on Akutagawa and Dazai, he has published translations of modern Japanese poetry in such periodicals as The Literary Review, Poet Lore, Metamorphosis, and Beacons. He is presently putting together a collection from such poets as Hagiwara Sakutaro, Kitahara Hakushu, Takamura Kotaro, and Murano Shiro.
