Disco band tinged album from the Rio superstar, September 5, 2010
This review is from: Alô Alô, Como Vai? (Audio CD)
Sometimes referred to as Jorge Ben's Argentinian album due to the cover picture (although it was in fact recorded in Rio de Janeiro), this 1980 release generally receives lukewarm reviews these days. If you overlook the late 70s disco band sound-- it is a product of its time, after all; there are a few tracks that really make this album essential for Ben fans-- ''Georgia e Jorge''', a duet with Lucinha Lins, is the highlight for me here. I've never been able to find out which tracks made it as singles, but it doesn't look like the album produced any major hits. The title track's vocal arrangement, a likely single release, reminds me of his 90s hit ''W Brasil'', although I prefer it to that more funked up track. The track also features his trademark 70s female backing chorus complementing his vocal. These tracks are followed by classic sounding Ben on ''Solitário Surfista''. Finally, there's an interesting ode to fellow Brazilian performer Caetano Veloso on ''Cae Cae Caetano''-- the song aside, the track musically sounds a bit dated. This album is out of print in Brazil but, at the time of writing, still available on Spanish import (which I have and like all the Jorge Ben re-releases on Discmedi sounds clean and crisp, though not remastered) and a papersleeved Japanese pressing (which I haven't heard). If Amazon allowed it, I'd give the album 3.5 stars overall, but as the above tracks are so good, I've had to got for the full 4 stars.

Among Brasil's great gifts to the world are grand artistes like Antonio Carlos Jobim, the sensational voice of Maria Bethania, and yes, the thorough going pure pleasure of Jorge Ben [Benjor]! The talented songwriter/singer began way back in the 60's with classic hits like Mas Que Nada and Chove Chuva-made most well known in usa by Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Ben then left his Samba jazz quintet for a journey into his and Brasil's African influences. His Mother was Ethiopian. Turning to a more percussive approach with wildly exciting drumming and his unique rhythm guitar Ben began to create a world class music filled with funky orchestration the likes of which James Brown would find delight. Many great compilations of Jorge Ben are out but his albums are much harder to find. This one from 1982 in Argentina is a thorough pleasure of high voltage high flyin' brass ala Cool and the Gang with the sensual beauty og Portuguese. Grab it! PLUS-you must buy the dvd Acoustico by Jorge Ben. By fiddling' with your dvd you can get the songs subtitles in English. The songwriting mixing Ben's wit and mirth with poetry of joy and faith across the mundane to the spiritual give taste to the wonder that is Brasil.
