Editorial Reviews

Chicago Arts Orchestra's debut release portrays New Spain as a Mecca of baroque and gallant music through a selection of works by two of colonial Mexico's most prolific and influential composers: Jerusalem, a master of the gallant style and Billoni, who helped shape late baroque repertoire.

Format: Audio CD
"Al Combate" is the title of the central piece of music on the disc, a work for orchestra, soloists, and chorus in eleven movements by the eighteenth-century violinist and composer Ignacio Jerusalem, born in Italy, moving to Spain and subsequently to Mexico, becoming a leading exponent in the New World for the Baroque and Galant music popular in Southern Europe at the time. There's a little on the album from everyone concerned, for everyone. Any fan of Baroque music would be sure to enjoy so distinguished a production as this.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Chris Matthews on February 27, 2013
Format: Audio CD
For their debut release, the Chicago Arts Orchestra has produced a terrific album. Under the direction of Javier Jose Mendoza, the CAO performs the music of Ignacio Jerusalem and Santiago Billoni, two composers with whom an audience is most likely unfamiliar; the music itself, however, is anything but. Similar to what one could expect from Vivaldi or early Haydn, this is Baroque music at its most accessible. In order to provide both a stylistically accurate and enjoyable listening experience, Maestro Mendoza has taken great care to assemble a group of very talented musicians who perform with the precision and grace that this style of music demands. In addition, the enhanced features of the CD provide extensive biographical information on the composers, program notes on each individual work performed, and a study score of Jerusalem’s “Symphony in G.” This album is a must-have for anyone who fashions themselves a fan of Baroque music.

A very solid performance from the Chicago Arts Orchestra. As you listen, you can feel the excitement and energy of this orchestra and the performers. So you feel as if you are really live at the concert and in the moment!
