Book Description

4 and upP and up
For twenty years "The Grouchy Ladybug" has delighted very young readers and listeners. Boldly designed pictures and a humorous text tell the story of a tiny anti-hero like no other. The Grouchy Ladybug did not say "please" or "thank you"; it would not share; it thought it was bigger and more important than anyone else; and it was always ready to pick a fight. This fast-moving story with clever die-cut pages invites children to explore concepts of time, size, shape, and manners. They will laugh and learn from this bad-tempered braggart who met its match and became a nicer and better behaved bug. Book written in Arabic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle book ... what can I say?, September 4, 2007

This review is from: Al Hashara Al Ghadiba: The Grouchy Ladybug (Paperback)
I am a big fan of Eric Carle's books. So, when I found this book in Arabic, I got it right away. Because I had a difficult time finding good Arabic books for my daughter, I always try to describe both good and bad things, with stress on the bad (just, cause I had specific needs in the books I get)

- This book is meant to teach time. It shows the times mentioned in the story on a clock, on the top corner of the book at each page where the time is mentioned. This teaches kids how to tell time. So simple, yet brilliant.
- It is really awesome that this book is written with ALL the diacritical marks (tashkeel), which makes it an awesome book for kids who are learning to read and write.
- It is rather Lebanese oriented Arabic (like most books in the market), so the Lady bug is called Da'souka instead of for example the Egyptian Abul Eid. Not such a big problem, when reading to your child, cause it is an easy alteration.
- It also teaches children that being nice saves you the trouble of having a bad day and of going through hardship. The lady bug had to take the huge trip being grouchy, when she just could have shared the food with the other lady bug. It ended eating with her in the end anyways.
- Lastly, I do not think that this book is for 0-3, not in English, nor in Arabic. Telling time, starts at an older age. It is more 3+ or older.
