Al Jarreau and Metropole Orkest: LIVE

Biography

The only vocalist in history to net Grammy Awards in three different categories (jazz, pop, and R&B, respectively), Al Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, WI, on March 12, 1940. The son of a vicar, he earned his first performing experience singing in the church choir. After receiving his master's degree in psychology, Jarreau pursued a career as a social worker, but eventually he decided to ... Read more in Amazon's Al Jarreau Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Al Jarreau & The Metropole Orkest: Incomparable!!! December 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD
"Al Jarreau And The Metropole Orkest: Live" is the new release from superstar Al Jarreau. This recording marks his new home with Concord Music Group, and it's a supreme beginning! Jarreau and Metropole Orkest conductor Vince Mendoza have selected works that allow both musical forms (orchestra and vocal) to mesh at their zenith. What has been produced is a classic production of wonderful music and singing. First of all, Jarreau has a voice that is almost incomparable, and a style that is certainly great and easily recognized. There simply aren't many artists of his caliber because he's as good as it gets. Four time Grammy Winner Vince Mendoza and the Orkest have been together since 2005. The Metropole Orkest is a Jazz-Pop Orchestra from the Netherlands, and is a one of a kind, combination jazz band and orchestra.

From the moment the recording begins, you know you're in for a treat, and neither Jarreau or The Metropole Orkest disappoint. Jarreau has taken the Grammy home 7 times, and when you listen to this CD, you instantly know why. There's so much passion in his sound and delivery, that it permeates every fiber of your being. The master singer takes you on a wonderful trek with his fantastic range and abilities. The caveat here is that you hate to hear each track end because this combination is almost too good to be true. Works that you are familiar with have been made much bigger and better with the excellent arranging and conducting by Mendoza. This is one serious album, and the only thing better than listening to it would have been being at the concert itself.

"Jacaranda Bougainvilla" is captivating as Jarreau sings with ability that's indescribable. There are no words. He's just that good! "We're In This Love Together" is done with a spark to it that is greatly enhanced by the collaboration. The sound that the Orchestra produces seems to inspire Jarreau to new heights. He really delivers throughout the entire CD, especially on the songs that have a jazz influence, and The Metropole Orkest hangs with him, soloing and jamming all the way through this stellar production.

Jarreau's performance is hypnotic and stunning. The musicians playing on this CD are marvelous, and the trumpet solo on "After All" is classic. This CD is more than excellent. It's Al!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Jarreau with Perfect Orchestral Backing June 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's interesting to compare this live new recording from Al Jarreau with his Live in London CD from the '80s. The orchestral arrangements by Vince Mendoza give Jarreau's gorgeous assortment of jazzy melodies, lovely ballads and funk a timeless feel that the synth-heavy London album sometimes lacks. This is just a beautiful album and the Metropole Orkest has, as Jarreau points out in his booklet introduction, some seriously talented musicians who can really swing. The assortment of songs are well chosen and produced by Mendoza -- whether it's in some of Al's earlier hits or classics like "We're In This Love Together" and especially the wonderful "After All" (a song that improves with age, and adapts wonderfully to the orchestral stage here), it's a perfect mix and just a tremendous debut album for Jarreau on the Concord label. Here's hoping that more will follow -- and quickly!
