I was eagerly awaiting this book, because I had discovered 18 months ago that Lewis Johnson was my 3rd Great Grand Uncle. I am directly related through his brother Francis. First thing, the Johnson came from VA, NOT ILL. They came in 1829 and lived in the Justice District of Texas. Lewis and his brother volunteered to fight at the Siege of Bexar, in the Fall of 1835. Francis went home when his service ended. Lewis stayed on and was trained at Cibolo, TX. He was then given the rank of Pvt in the Texas Army. At
the time of the Siege of the Alamo he was assigned to Capt. Cary's artillery unit. He died just like the 186 others. He deserved a REAL genealogy,
Groneman swept him, and I am sure anyone that wasn't the famous few, under the rug( so to speak)
The Texas Historical Society at Austin University (on-line) has a LOT MORE accurate information than Groneman. This book was not a Genealogy of the Defenders

I chose the book for its complete [as far as can be known] listing of those whe died at the Alamo. Their letters home were quite revealing.

An outstanding compilation of bios of Alamo defenders in 1836. Each one of the heroes mentioned has an interesting story behind their reason for being a part of the founding of the Republic of Texas. I appreciate the responsiveness of the Amazon seller, and I've never been disappointed by an Amazon purchase.

I bought this book for my husband, after briefly visiting the Alamo and finding a distant relative's name on the wall. He read it immediately and handed it to me and I couldn't put it down until I was finished. Very good book, very well written.
