Editorial Reviews

Not a whole lot to say about Alamo, it is just a swingin' little rock album from 1971 that we keep getting requests to reissue on CD. It was originally out on the Atlantic label and features Larry Raspberry. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars RARE CLASSIC FROM THE EARLY 70's!, June 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Alamo (Audio CD)
Many thanks to the folks at Black Rose Records for re-releasing this gem from the early 70's! ALAMO's sound is probably best compared to the music of Warhorse, with the vocal style of Blood Sweat & Tears. Very good guitar/organ driven rock with raspy vocals.

My only complaint would be in the production end of the cd. It sounds like it was recorded a little too loudly. Once in awhile the vocals distort a little. Not enough to detract from the overall listing experience, but still enough to be noticable. The worst distortion is on the cymbals in the song, "Question Raised". There are a lot of cymbals in this song and the distortion on them is very distracting.

I remember a friend buying this album back when it was new. I really liked it and searched all over for a copy of my own. Having turned up nothing in my search I just figured I'd never find it. Then one day while going through ... I came across it for ...! I immediately bought it! A few months later I went to the shore with a friend and took my stereo along with some albums, including Alamo. While we were listining to it one evening, someone spilled ginger ale all over the stereo and all over my Alamo album! The stereo cleaned up nicely, but I could never get the sticky ginger ale out of the grooves of the album. Thus began another frantic search for the album. About a year after this incient I again found a copy ...! Extatic, I bought another copy. I'm thankful to say that I still have that copy to this day, but I was extreemly happy to see that it has now been re-released on cd! It's nice to know that I now have a copy that barring fire, theft, or ginger ale, should last me the rest of my life! GOD IS GOOD!!

Another thing that sort of surprised me is that the copyright on the cd is 1999. I only fisrt saw it listed about 6 months ago. It makes me wonder what other titles this label has released that haven't gotten distribution yet. I wish there was a website on the cd to check into that but there isn't.

I've enjoyed Alamo for over 25 years now and was estatic to find it released on CD as my 2 LP's were worn fairly bad. As was said the CD is recorded loud, but I don't hear the distortion the other reviewers mention, FWIW I have a fairly high end audio rig with a kilo buck CD player and equally good turntable. On one song on the CD there is a moment of low frequency oscilation, and as was said the bass is a bit over exagerated, but overall the CD sounds very clear and crisp, especially considering this material is from the 1970's. Strong songwriting, great guitar playing, the guitarist Larry Rasberry put out a solo LP, Larry Rasberry and the Highsteppers that was a flop, but this is some very fine rock and roll folks. Evey cut is choice material!Highly recommended!!
