Book Description

February 18, 1998
This is the first book to explore the rollercoaster life of the talented singer/songwriter whose versatile voice and uncompromising lyrics propelled her first album, Jagged Little Pill, to multiplatinum sales and four Grammy awards.

Stuart Coles focuses on the events that transformed her from a teen pop idol in Canada to an icon of alternative music and figurehead for 'angry young women' everywhere. He also examines her unusual anti-star beliefs and opposition to drugs and alcohol as well as assessing the controversy which surrounds her success, with critical claims that she is a 'record company invention'.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you love Alanis, you'll hate this!, July 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Alanis Morissette: Death of Cinderella (Paperback)
Text-wise, this is my least favorite Alanis book. The pictures are all very pretty, though (my personal favorite is the one on page 26.) In this book, the first five or six chapters are tedious and dry. The author had simply re-written Paul Cantin's account on Alanis's early years in a boring way. (Paul's book is the greatest!) Since he had to be concise, Stuart Coles left out interesting, unknown details about her life and rambled on about what we know already. If this guy speaks as dully as he writes, we would have a cure for insomnia. However, what I hate the most is his use of words. The words "whilst" "thus" etc. keep popping up until you want to strangle this guy! In addition, he disses and worships Alanis in the same sentences. "The record is simply stunning and beautiful, if not a little plain and repetitive at times." "Alanis's voice is always compelling but her shows are boring." The author also says things that are simply rude. "Guitars were pored over with predictable rockist, mastabatory indulgence." Many of the facts in the book are also inaccurate: according to Mr. Coles, Alanis started piano at 9, and JLP was released JUNE 13, 1994. Can you believe it? The chapter "Awards and Attacks" is extremely hurtful on Alanis and her fans behalf. The author pretends not to criticize her by stating that "many critics have said" or "so-and-so declared." Then, he defends her and insults her once again. And, uh, don't listen to what this guy says about Alanis's future, she will NOT live alone in a cabin writing music for her own pleasure . I DO NOT recommend the text of this book for any Alanis fans. Myself, I simply look at the pictures.
