5.0 out of 5 stars More about the phenomenon than the music - but so what?
Whatever you thought of Alanis in 1995 and whatever you think of her now (if you're like me, that's two pretty different things), there's no denying that JLP was much more than a megahit record. (Mentally compare it to, say, Def Leppard's "Hysteria" and you'll see what I mean.) It was perfectly in tune with its moment and it hit millions of people where they...

I bought this DVD thinking it would be an Alanis Morissette concert in its entrity. Alanis is my favorite singer, and I couldn't get home fast enough to watch this DVD. A great deal of the video is just a bunch of silly shots of the band traveling around acting like teenagers. There are a lot of songs, but the presentation is horrible. During the same song, it skips around to as much as five different venues. A song will start out in a big, glitzy arena, and just about the time you are getting into the music, it will skip to an outdoor concert with lousy sound, then it may jump to the MTV awards show, or a video, or an acoustic set. This is so annoying, and just makes it impossible to enjoy the music. I would not mind seeing Alanis in different venues, but please leave each song in only one venue. Considering the potential of DVD, it would be really neat if you could pick the song, and which venue you would like to see it in. I wish Alanis would come out with a concert on DVD that was just one show from beginning to end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrible, July 20, 2003
By
PSM/Bokor (United States) - See all my reviews
I must admit that my wife and I only watched the first fifteen minutes of this DVD, before turning it off. We're both fans of Alanis, but we were amazed that she allowed this DVD to be released. It's a waste of money. The sound quality is horrible. We have a relatively large collection of live performance DVD's, and this one is soon heading to a music store that buys used DVD's. I doubt we'll get much for it.

I hope that Alanis releases a high quality DVD of one of her performance with no gimmics, no artsy/fartsy [stuff] that detracts from her amazing voice and lyrics.

Whatever you thought of Alanis in 1995 and whatever you think of her now (if you're like me, that's two pretty different things), there's no denying that JLP was much more than a megahit record. (Mentally compare it to, say, Def Leppard's "Hysteria" and you'll see what I mean.) It was perfectly in tune with its moment and it hit millions of people where they live. (And not just grouchy middle-class white girls either, contrary to legend. The look of rapture of the face of an Indonesian male fan as he sings along with the lyrics can tell you that.) She says she thought of retiring after it came out and frankly, she might as well have. There really was nowhere for her to go but down.

Other people here have complained about the way most songs on this video are assembled from snippets of many different performances given months and countries apart (with widely varying levels of audio quality), and I see their point. This does compromise the integrity of the music, strictly speaking. But it does assemble a fascinating portrait of the JLP phenomenon which, viewed as a whole, is a lot more interesting than any single concert taped in Dallas (or Sydney, or Buenos Aires) ever could be.

Watching it unfurl again at this distance in time - even knowing that there wouldn't be, strictly speaking, a happy ending - is still a remarkable experience. Just seeing this horse-faced young Canadian woman with a few more artistic pretentions than she can support and 8 or 9 terrific songs in her backpack speaking to legions of people in literally every corner of the globe is enough to make you to believe in music all over again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably HORRIBLE, July 5, 2006
We have begun to assemble quite an extensive collection of concert DVDs and this is, by far, the worst one we have purchased to date!! In fact, we will be returning the DVD and don't particularly care whether or not it can be returned for store credit or for a return of our money, we just want it out of our collection. We sat through this entire performance, just hoping that it would get better...what a WASTE of time. It is too bad that such a fantastic artist could produce and direct something that can be best described as complete and total garbage! DO NOT waste your money on this DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars come off it, June 29, 2002
Okay, you want to hear the music straight through? Listen to the CD. Sure she sounds brillant live, but this video lets you kinda travel along with her at the early stage of her adult success. Show you what she was doing, I only wish it had more of her talking and showing who she really is. Clips to different shows is a peek into her life. It is an awesome view!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars BAD Sound!, January 24, 2002
Whenever we watch this DVD, we turn the sound all the way down, and listen to the CD. The way the audio goes up and down will make you sick. This DVD just can not stay with one song all the way through. It keeps on switching from one place to another. What a waste. Too bad : ( Skip this one!

1.0 out of 5 stars Jagged big disappointment, August 7, 2001
By
"gizmo17" (Freehold, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
This DVD is lost some where between home video and bootleg. It is too choppy to enjoy, constant changing from one concert location to another, several times during each song. There is entirely too much going on at any singular moment. In addition most of the sound track is of amateur quality. I actual got a headache trying to watch it. Jagged Little Pill is an insult to Alanis fans. You would think a star of her caliber would not allow such garbage to carry her name. As a fan I am deeply disappointed and feel I have been played a fool.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jagged Little Pill Live hurts to swallow, December 27, 1999
Content of each track is intermixed cuts from several performances. No continuity in either the video or audio. Painful to watch or listen to. Stick with the CD releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is who she is!, December 17, 1999
The DVD of Alanis Morissette is a must have for a fan of Alanis. It is not just one concert but moves through different cities and stages. I found this entertaining and kept the video fresh. Her views on things are also a good break to all music. This DVD is excellently produced and Alanis's voice shines through. Again if you are a true fan there should be no delay in buying. If you just enjoy her music you should seriously consider buying this because it is a freah and well produced DVD. (The VHS is worth it as well.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy it if you're a die-hard fan, December 1, 1999
By
I bought this tape because I thought it'd show all of her videos of her songs. It didn't. It wasn't a big dissappointment, although some scenes in there have horrible shots and audio recordings. If you're a big die-hard fan of Alanis Morissette, you gotta buy it, just because it's Alanis. But if you're not, like me, it's really nothing to get hyped up about. Buy the video for kicks if you want, but don't expect some awesome clips in there.
