More About the Author
As a devout lover of all things literary; I began reading at a very early age to escape the horrors and atrocities that I experienced growing up in foster care. Reading allowed me to create a reality far removed from the one that I was living. My love of reading naturally progressed to a love of writing as well.
It was because of my childhood that I became a child advocate for abandoned, abused, neglected and missing children.
As a staunch proponent of foster care, I have helped raise funds to benefit The Children's Aids Foundation, The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, The Children's Literacy Fund, Everybody Wins USA, Children's Rights and CASA. CASA's are Court Appointed Special Advocates who are the voice of abused and neglected foster care. CASA, unfortunately, was just getting its start when I was in foster care. Despite never having had a CASA, I strongly believe in the organization and the work that they do.
As an author, I focus my writing on hard-hitting truth and world-changing reality. I write about life and the lessons learned throughout the course of life. I have, just recently, steeped into the fray of fiction writing, and will be publishing my first work of fiction, The Dane Legacy; Secrets & Lies, in late July. I'm having fun writing fiction, and it's giving me a break from the serious as I write about the lighter side of life, love, family and well...whatever takes my fancy.
My autobiography, The Road To Me I Now Know Why That Caged Bird Sang, has become recommended reading for university students wishing to enter into the field of Social Work. It details my life in foster care, my battle with cancer and the hardships of being a homeless single mother to two small children.
I continue to write thought provoking reading with my latest novel; Alas, Peace Be Still The novel is a gut wrenching, soul cleansing account of my breakdown, breakthrough which was brought on as a direct result of the actions and words of award winning talk show host Oprah Winfrey and critically acclaimed producer Tyler Perry. The book is receiving critical acclaim and hard-hitting-five star reviews.
You can read the reviews via Amazon.com and here as well when it was reviewed by world renowned TV, Movie and book critic, Kam Williams.
The novel is now available exclusively on Amazon!!!.
I have several other books in the works including my first work of nonfiction-fiction. It is a 7-book children's series written in the spirit of such works as Harry Potter, Alice In Wonderland, Where The Wild Things Are, The Lion The Witch & The Wardrobe and Lord of The Rings.
The series is based entirely on the truth of the make-believe world that I created, as a child, which became my escape from the tortures and abuses that I suffered at the hands of my foster parents while living in a foster home in Reed Kentucky.
Top Customer Reviews
Just released exclusively on Amazon , Alas Peace Be Still is the heart - and often gut wrenching - account of Angelique's reaction to seeing Oprah Winfrey interview critically acclaimed producer Tyler Perry.
The result is a moving and inspirational account of the author's state of life, the realisation of the depth of her faith, her shift from balancing on the brink of suicide to embracing her life - even the parts she is not happy with.
Alas, Peace Be Still is not easy to read. At times Jessica Angelique's despair and desperation are almost overwhelming - but she writes with such generosity and such truth you can not turn away. It is indeed a rare privilege to be able to share someone's journey as they rediscover the truth of themselves.
Toward the end she writes:
"When you spend time with yourself, you get to know yourself and that's what's happening to me. I'm finally getting to know my true self. It also means that you learn how to love the person that you are."
Jessica Angelique's courage and honesty are a rare gem indeed.
By Angelique Jurd for The Kindle Book Review
Jessica never entered therapy to give herself a chance to heal her deep wounds. That's why her world came crashing down on October 27th, 2010 while watching Tyler Perry share his own life story.
The net result is Alas, Peace Be Still, a heartbreaking memoir by a survivor with every right to be bitter. Miraculously, this once-anguished soul has ostensibly put the nightmare behind her and arrived at a peaceful place of gratitude and serenity.
