The best general guide to the state I have found, great illustrations,

I am a frequent Alaska tourist and have used several of the Eyewitness city guides in the past, so I was glad to see that they came out with this book. No one can touch Eyewitness for design and illustrations and their Alaska guide is no exception. Their maps are amazingly clean and functional. It is impossible to pick up this book and not get sucked into it.
The guide is not as comprehensive as a Frommer's or Fodor's, but for me, who needs a listing of every restaurant and gift shop in an area. Eyewitness focuses on the can't-miss attractions and gives more than enough shopping and dining options to cover your stay in state. The information is in bite-sized chunks that are easily scanned and give a good overview to the areas you're visiting. If I had to say something against this guide it would be that it is so filled with photos that they need to be pretty small. When I flip through it and see these tiny images of areas I have visited, they just don't do justice to the scope of the landscape. But then, maybe this will just help you appreciate Alaska when you are there in person. If you or someone you know is going to Alaska for a vacation, get them a copy of this book. This is the best guide to the entire state I have found.

Alaska (Eyewitness Travel Guides),

I have used the Eyewitness guides for several other countries. The Alaska guide has the same beautiful color pictures but the city & tour info was nat as complete as some of the other guides. I ended up borrowing a Fodor's guide from a friendFodor's Alaska 2007 (Fodor's Gold Guides)

Good but not great,

The guidebook contains a lot of good illustrations, pictures and maps. However, detailed information on the places is limited, and definitely not sufficient for me to plan the full trip. I used the book together with the LP Discover Alaska which I prefer over this one given there are more details and maps are also great. But in both cases you will need some more information, I ended up planning most of the trip over internet and just used the books as indications on where to go. All in all, it's a good book to learn about Alaska but it's not enough to plan a trip in detail.

Pretty and great for cruisers,

DK does such beautiful books. I was very disappointed in its coverage beyond the cruise and tour routes. It would be great for that or to get someone excited about going, but it's just a teaser.
DK - I'd be happy to help you fill the gaps.

This is the fifth DK travel book we have purchased. hands down, the information in them is uniformly accurate, easy to access and visually appealing. Backpackers and seasoned older travelers alike will benefit from DK Alaska and others in the travel series.

EYEWITNESS Travel Guides are the absolute BEST for any country, state or city.I find the more inclusive state or country guides the best. Hard sturdy binding, glossy pages with-stand any abuse, won't fall apart after lugging around in a stuffed valise or lazy back-pack, full of photos, and the most up to date information on lodging, restaurants and attractions.Though a bit pricey compared to other travel guides, WELL worth it. It is so handy, you find you will use it over and over even when you are familiar with where you are going.

This is my first Eyewitness Travel Guide and I loved it! I will only be buying Eyewitness Travel Guides in the future. I really enjoyed the book and the insight it gave me about traveling and cruising in Alaska.
