5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely, highly recommended display piece., February 5, 2007
This review is from: Alaska Native Ways: What the Elders Have Taught Us (Hardcover)
As Alaska's natives confront the realities of modern living which are changing not only their culture but their familiar environment, they're drawing strength in renewed attention to their heritage - and Alaska Native Ways: What the Elders Have Taught Us is an important tribute to this strength. General-interest libraries as well as Native American specialty collections receive an oversized, coffee-table-type display of gorgeous full-page color photos by Roy Corral, with accompany text by Natives and an introduction by Will Mayo. The text is ten essays, one from each of Alaska's Native cultures, which explores and teaches one special value common to their teachings over the generations: as such they provide not only a tribute to, but a celebration and re-affirmation of Alaskan Native ways in a lovely, highly recommended display piece.

I just got back from a long visit in Alaska and then jumped to Boston for an extended holiday visit. This is a good book on Alaska. I recommend it---interesting!

This is a good book to provide an overview of what makes the many Alaska native groups so unique and beautiful. The photographs are wonderful and the prose accompanying them is relevant and personal.

This beautiful book conveys the beauty of Native people and culture -- showing commonalities and differences among different Native groups. Outstanding photos reinforce the values about which the text talks. People of all ages can enjoy and learn from the book; it is real in its portrayal of the various Native cultures, as seen through the lens of a talented photojournalist, Roy Corral, and told through the words of those who know and live the Native way. Revisiting the book renews my understanding of Alaska Native Ways -- and each visit results in a new appreciation of the ten essays describing Native values. This book is a fine gift to yourself as well as to others, whether you live in Alaska or want to experience its beauty from afar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alaska Native Ways, November 2, 2007
This review is from: Alaska Native Ways: What the Elders Have Taught Us (Hardcover)
We are in a heated debate if the picture on pg. 26 is Hooper Bay or Tooksook Bay. Hooper Bay is not located on an island. The pictures are very nice. We are enjoying the book.
