Grade 4-6?This book updates previous books on the history of the pipeline to include the Exxon Valdez oil spill of March 1989. Short chapters describe controversies surrounding the project, design challenges, and the actual construction. An appendix offers a list for further reading, source notes, and a helpful index. While the authors do not mention the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and the controversy that surrounds that area as a possible new drilling site, the text refers to geologists searching for "as-yet-undiscovered sources of oil, as well as alternative sources of energy" as oil production on the North Slope declines.
