Book Description

PARASITE PUBLICATIONS ~ Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Alaskan Fire:

Blaze MacKenzie is a freakishly-tall heiress who just discovered that her ‘parents’ actually found her abandoned as an infant in some bizarre human sacrifice in the woods. Along with that nasty little bit of information came a six hundred thousand dollar check, a strange golden feather, and the ability to move to the Alaska Bush and begin her dream-life living off the Grid.

Unfortunately for Blaze, life in rural Alaska isn’t as peaceful as she expected. Among her many startling discoveries is that her sexy new handyman, Jack Thornton, has already ‘claimed’ the territory that her new lodge is sitting on …

Further complicating matters, Jack makes it clear to Blaze that there are a good many things that go bump in the Alaskan night, and when a pack of werewolves goes rogue and starts killing or turning everyone along the Yentna River, Blaze and Jack find themselves in a fight for survival in this magic-soaked Land of the Midnight Sun.

About the Author:

While Alaskan science fiction/fantasy/romance author Sara King is not six-foot-four with carrot-soup hair and eyes that'll make a wereverine stare, she does live the same crazy, socially questionable, off-the-grid lifestyle that she writes about in Alaskan Fire. She is fully acquainted with the quirks of outdoor plumbing, grizzly bears, questionable hygiene, private arsenals, and hypothermia, and has a vast and inspiration-rich wilderness right off her front doorstep. 5.0 out of 5 stars Don't start this one on a Tuesday February 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
With her debut novel, Sara King's engrossing, character-driven style and superlative ability to draw the reader into the world of her creation will keep you reading until the wee hours of the morning, then leave you anxiously awaiting her next book.

In Alaskan Fire, we are introduced to Blaze MacKenzie, a 6'4" beanpole with carrot-orange hair and a lifelong ambition to own a farm in the Alaskan Bush. When her parents are killed in a car accident, her unexpected inheritance finally allows her to pursue her dream. We follow her as she purchases The Sleeping Lady Lodge and heads to the Bush to try and make that dream a reality. What she finds there, in the person of her new handyman, Jack Thornton, is only the first surprise that awaits her and the reader. Intrigue, action, suspense, a magic feather, and an amazing personal discovery await Blaze in her new home in the Bush.

From the first page, the book grabs your attention, deluges you with images of the spectacular unspoiled wilderness of Alaska, and makes you feel the wonder of being on the edge of one of Earth's last frontiers. Once you manage to take a breath, the discovery of a world where magical creatures are real, and the wilderness is much more sinister and dangerous than you imagined, roots you to your chair in anticipation of the next twist and turn. However, this is not just a supernatural/paranormal fantasy book, it's also a romance. But not a tired, hackneyed, formulaic romance where the story only serves as a backdrop to the expected meaningful glances, steamy looks and perhaps a ripping bodice or rock-hard...abdomen, no, far from it. Instead, the element of romance woven through the book gives the adventure a sensual, edgy tension that doesn't disappoint in the end.

My advice is: buy this book today, but don't start reading it on a Tuesday night. You'll find yourself headed off to work on Wednesday morning, bleary-eyed and drinking a venti triple-shot Americano, because you couldn't put it down and stayed up all night reading it. Believe me, I've been there, because this is no finish-it-in-a-couple-hours book that leaves you wishing there was more. It'll grab you and keep you reading all day long, until you either can't keep your eyes open or you finish it. Then you'll find yourself telling your coworkers and your friends, when they ask about the dark circles under your eyes, about this amazing book by your new favorite author that they absolutely MUST read...but not until the weekend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alaskan Fire Review May 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This novel is far too long, especially the first half, where Blaze agonizes over and over about her physical appearance and shakes in her boots or runs, screaming, into the woods. After the fourth or fifth iteration, I was ready to quit reading.

Time passes in the first half without much at the beginnings of chapters to let the reader know that it is now two months later (or whatever). Author could stand to improve on her transitions.

But then, about halfway through, she has a personality transplant. All of a sudden, she is imaginative, and curious, and not afraid. No real reason, except that the novel would have gone nowhere with another 300 pages of self-centered fear and loathing. Some basis for her transformation would have been good.

On the positive side, there were very few errors of grammar, spelling, or sentence structure. What a pleasure for the reader (me), after slogging through so many Indie books written by English fail students.

The plot was engaging, though unevenly paced (the final event was a zoom-through of just a few pages).

The author has a real "ear" for dialog, and does a superb job of making one character's "voice" distinct from the others. That went a long way toward redeeming the novel from my initial impression.

All in all, average (3-star), with potential in the future for higher ratings. Author, in my opinion, needs to re-read, review, edit. Not everything that is produced by the keyboard needs to end up in the final version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book! January 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A funny, tense, breathtaking book by one of the better authors I've ever read. I really liked the way King mixed humor, myth, adventure, and romance and turned it into something that had me unable to put it down. A good book that lasts, not one of those finish-it-in-one-night books nowadays. It SATISFIES. All the characters were so unique and enjoyable and I had so much fun getting into their heads... If you enjoy Paranormal, Fantasy, Romance, or anything Alaska, you'll love this book!
