5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, November 14, 2000

I am owned by a Malamute - only mine is the giant breed and I have to say that this book is EXCELLENT and right on the mark. I loved the history of the breed as well as what I can expect. Yes, they are stubborn. Yes, they are pack animals, with the family as their pack and yes they do howl! The section on whether or not this dog is right for you was great! Not everyone can be owned by a Mal - and I thank the author for that!!

The information is precise and well researched and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. After being owned one of these gorgeous creatures, you won't want any other kind of dog!

I have the book lying out on my table and everyone always wants to look through it.

If you are a Mal owner - this is one great book to have!

5.0 out of 5 stars The book every malamute owner or potential owner should have, February 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Alaskan Malamutes (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
A fantastic book filled with such good, sound information the reader wonders how they got it all into so few pages. The book tells all about the normal things like grooming, feeding, and health, but it tells you so much about the history, how to train or find the right trainer, activity needs, and breeding issues. The book also has a wonderful section on "Do you know what you're getting into?". The excellent pictures in this book alone are worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazingly complete book in a small package, March 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Alaskan Malamutes (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I'm a prospective malamute owner, and stumbled on this book browsing Amazon. I received a surprisingly thin (less than 1/4" thick) book, and was pleasantly stunned as I came to appreciate the huge amounts of actually useful information not crammed but fitted nicely into this small package. It includes healthy doses of "are you really sure you know what you're getting into" and "for the dog's sake be honest about yourself" but manages to get the message across strongly without being preachy. My copy is already dog-eared.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, April 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alaskan Malamutes (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I purchased this book because I was considering a Malamute for a pet. After reading it, I decided that I didn't have the right environment for a Malamute. I still think they are beautiful dogs, but I'm not the right owner for one. It's very informative and easy to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Prospective Mal Owner, March 17, 2002

As a prospective Mal owner I found this book very imformative, more so than some of the larger and more expensive books which I have in my collection. Especially the section ARE YOU THE RIGHT PERSON FOR A MAL. I found this especially interesting as a Mal is not suitable for just anyone. A well written book with plenty of good information which some other books don't cover enough. I recommend this book to anyone, new and old Mal owners alike.

Briefly..
We read this book, and others before adopting our Malamute. We found it to be right on the money. Especially important are the parts of the book that discuss on whether you personally are up to adopting a Malamute.
Personally, I wouldn't have another Dog, period. But they are absolutely not for everybody. Better read this book and some others before getting one of these precious and gorgeous animals. If you decide not to, it makes a beautiful addition to any library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Malamute Information, March 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book clearly states the pros and cons of having a Malamute. They are as discribed. I wish there was more training information in the book. The history is nice, but more content would be effective. The feeding and other care needs more elaboration. Good overview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Breed Overview, July 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am generally not very happy with these "breed books", however I was very impressed with this book. The information about Malamutes is very helpful. It gives a very good overview of the breed, and is fair in presenting the challenges, not just a romaticized sales pitch. I also was very pleased with the emphasis on positive training methods. Overall, for an introduction to a breed book, I felt this is one of the best I've seen, and would recommend it for anyone who is considering getting a Malamute. It is a very good overview of the breed and what to think about and plan and prepare for---and will be a good reference as you start out. It is not an indepth book on all subjects, but a very good intro.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be sure to read this before you get a Malamute, March 29, 2009
By
Alaskan malamutes are large, independent-minded, strongly pack-oriented breed. They're also beautiful, and they love exploring the outdoors with you. But if you don't want a disobedient, domineering 125 pound dog to destroy your house and threaten children and smaller pets, you need to know what you're getting into.

This book provides an essential first step. A malamute is a major time commitment, and you need to know alpha training principles so that the dog is happy with his role in your family pack. This book doesn't address the issue, but you also need to think about the personalities of the people in your household - - neither the meek nor those prone to physical abuse should go anywhere near ths breed. For the right owners, however, the Malamute can be a wonderful and loyal companion.

This book also has a lot of pictures of beautiful adult Malamutes and adorable puppies.
