4.0 out of 5 stars A History for People in a Hurry, April 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alaska's History: The People, Land, and Events of (Alaska Pocket Guide) (Paperback)
This book is perfect for a quick overview of Alaska's history. It is a good size for tucking in the suitcase or reading on a plane. Lots of historic photos bring this history to life. This brief history captures the untamed history of Alaska in a very readable format.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Survey of Alaska's History, July 16, 2006
This review is from: Alaska's History: The People, Land, and Events of (Alaska Pocket Guide) (Paperback)
Harry Ritter's "Alaska History" is a compact and highly readable survey of Alaskan history, especially suited for the visitor or tourist. Ritter describes Alaska's unique past, from pre-history through European exploration, Gold rushes, World War II, and Statehood to the present day. His format is a series of two page vignettes, illustrated with photographs, that can be read individually in just a couple of minutes. Ritter's approach is evenhanded; he avoids taking sides on any of a large number of controversies associated with Alaska's past and present. The vignettes provide a wealth of background information that will enhance the experience of tourists visiting Alaska and explain the names and circumstances of places commonly visited, such as Anchorage, Valdez, or Denali National Park.

This book is highly recommended to visitors to Alaska.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fast and Fun Read on AK's History, September 2, 2010
By
This review is from: Alaska's History: The People, Land, and Events of (Alaska Pocket Guide) (Paperback)
This was a great quick read. I was visiting Alaska and needed a small book to give me a quick lesson on a broad range of topics in Alaska's history and culture. This was a perfect book for it! I learned a great deal from it. And often the stories I read in the book had just that little additional piece of info from what the tour guides were telling us to make me feel like I REALLY got a solid understanding of Alaska's past.

Highly recommended!
