A terrific alternative to cruise(cattle)boats, where you might have a few hours in the largest communities, this book will give you all the info you need for ferry-hopping. Pack a bag/backpack, grab this book and have a ball. You get the best data on each and every one of the communities that the ferry system serves - what to see &/or do, local accomodations or camping, facilities available and events. Who offers senior discounts, where can you rent a boat or find a local tour boat or flight, local trivia and anecdotes, what are the room rates... No, this isn't a sightseer's tourbook, it is a guide to the ferry system and the communities it serves - and for pennypinchers a MUST! Go - and have FUN!

I bought this book because I am planning a trip to Alaska using the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system and I wanted to add to what I had learned from Frommer's general guide to Alaska. Sadly, the book was a waste of my money. Frommer's actually has more of the detail I was looking for, e.g. which portions of the route are most scenic and therefore should be planned for daylight passage. This book added literally nothingto my knowledge base, though my wallet issomewhat thinner.
