Hope for Children of Alcoholics offers a straightforward description of alcoholism, what Alateen is, how Alateen works, and gives personal stories of teens with alcoholic loved ones. This is a good book for anyone with a family member or friend who is an alcoholic because it answers all the basic questions a person may have, such as: What is alcoholism, Who are alcoholics, Why do alcoholics drink, & Why is Alcoholism called a family disease.

It explains how Alateen can help and gives very thorough information in case someone wonders if they might want to be involved in Alateen. It explains the twelve step approach, how to find or start an Alateen group, plan a meeting, etc.

Can't give any perspective because I haven't read the book yet. Any book that gives perspective into the disease of alcoholism is better than nothing.

Some teenagers whose parents have problems with alcohol will recognize that even though they are also affected by the drinking and seek help. Many more won't. They don't even know that help is out there. Alateen (and Al-Anon) are lifelines to family members of alcoholics and this book can be a great introduction to Alateen for those who need it. Teens will see themselves in some of the stories and find coping tools and strategies that can save their sanity, if not their lives. Buy it for yourself, or buy it for a friend who needs it. Even if you don't know anyone who needs it now, Youth Leaders should have a couple of copies in their inventory to give away when the need arises. Feel free to tuck in a list of local Alateen meetings as a bookmark.

I did not like it. It promoted the Alateen program too much. Only buy this if you want the recipient to join Alateen not as a source of information about being a child of an alcoholic.
