I was in search of a mineral based sunscreen that was affordable and safe.

I do know mineral sunscreens can leave you a bit ghostly-looking, since the zinc/titanium dioxide don't rub in all the way.
SaraBelle82
Because its mineral it is hard to rub in and it does leave a white residue but at least I know where I have put it on.

I originally bought Badger sunscreen as it was the highest rated sunscreen on EWG and I don't use any products on our family that contain parabens, phtalates, synthetic fragrances, etc. I had always used California Baby suscreen in the past but the price went up significantly this year that I decided to go with something else. What a disappointment Badger was - I tried it on myself first, thankfully, and burned to a crisp everywhere I applied it. I did numerous tests (but this isn't a review for Badger, you can read many of the same experiences on their product). So I came back to Amazon to read through reviews from people that had the same experience and get recommendations for something else. I ended up getting this (although it isn't as highly rated on EWG but I needed something that would protect my kids from sunburn - not GIVE them a burn) and I also ordered Goddess Garden. The Goddess Garden, if rated on EWG, would probably get a really wonderful rating but it can be ashy if the kid's have any dry skin on them. I do like it, though, and use that one mainly for my infant. I use this Alba one on myself and my older child...and I LOVE this! It isn't greasy AT ALL and rubs in so nicely. It protects from sunburn, most importantly, and doesn't have a strong smell at all (I am sensitive to scents and generally prefer unscented everything). I will actually continue to buy this sunscreen....like I said, it rates a little lower on EWG but we aren't in the sun daily so it is something we are only using occasionally.

I've used this sunscreen outdoors and in indoor tanning beds for the past two years (I tan to treat my psoriasis, so I use the product indoors on my face and neck to prevent wrinkles/skin damage). Despite the trivial issues with consistency and separation due to temperature fluctuations which other reviewers have complained about, I highly recommend it.

The sunscreen does clump and separate when exposed to temperature fluctuations. This is a natural result of the fact that it is made with zinc oxide, a solid, non-water-soluble product. Zinc sunscreens used to contain so much solid that they formed a white film on the skin rather than blended into it. Modern zinc oxides like this one are blend-able and breathable (though it will take longer to blend than more liquid sunscreens). The separation can be mitigated by shaking well before use.

Zinc oxide is the most effective, least toxic sunscreen on the market. It provides an immediate physical barrier to UV rays, not a chemical block that requires 20 minutes to "soak in". (BTW, why would you want a chemical to have to "soak into" your skin before it works? The fewer chemicals I have to soak in, the better.) Popular brands of sunscreen contain such unnecessary chemicals as oxybenzone, a known allergen and hormone disruptor. The Environmental Working Group has a useful list of low-toxicity sunscreens, which includes this one.

In my experience, this sunscreen is very water-resistant, to the point that you may find it difficult to remove from your face. Any oil-based lubricant or cleanser will remove it effectively, including olive oil or baby oil. Avoid scrubbing with soap to remove it, which will substantially dry out your skin.

If you are looking for a sunblock that will work immediately and do its job without pumping you full of carcinogens, this is the one.

This is a good price for this type of sunscreen. Because its mineral it is hard to rub in and it does leave a white residue but at least I know where I have put it on. What I dislike is that when I put it on my face, and throughout the day happen to rub my eyes after touching my face it burns like hell. This is especially difficult when it happens to my son, but I got it because it was rated as safe by the Environmental Working Group.

I like the fact that this is mineral but is gooey upon first application and smells rather medicinal. The lotion does rub in just fine but I'll likely try another line of Alba products after this one.

First tried Badger...I use Sunscreen to play golf, not go into the water. It was hard to put on and left me super white, which is OK, but then I noticed I was inexplicably getting burned. Guess it's so thick it leaves tiny gaps, maybe ? Switched to this and it works like a charm. Next, I will try their 45 spf product which has less Zinc Oxide and more Titanium Dioxide.

Great stuff. I have a very bad reaction to sunburn and the chemical sun block just make it worse. Alba allows me to go out in the sun anytime.

Great for kids who swim ALL DAY LONG in the summer - it's the only cheaply priced, non-toxic sunscreen that I've found on EWG that is water-resistant for 6+hours of swimming. It is hard to apply, and it does make you look a paler, but to be honest, while I do care about what I look like on the beach or at the pool, I prefer to be a bit paler than red from sunburn.

I wanted inexpensive water-resistant sunscreen that did not contain avobenzone. It is the key ingredient in most broad-spectrum sunscreens and it makes me break out in a rash. Most sunscreens that do not contain avobenzone are expensive. I was hoping that Alba Botanicas Mineral Sunscreen would be a good inexpensive choice.

It is cheap. The container has 4 oz. for the price of most products that give you 3 oz. That is its best feature. As compared to Neutrogena Mineral for Baby, it goes on very thick. I had to rub a lot to get it on then it goes fairly clear but extremely shiny. Also it does clump a bit. Neutrogena goes on much easier and is not as shiny but it leaves a much more opaque yellow-white color on the skin either because it has more titanium or it is a high SPF. Alba is SPF 30 compared with Neutragena which is SPF 60. Alba is only good for 30 minutes in the water while Neutragena is good for 80. I do not like the way either of them look. Since I am using them to go out and exercise it is not that important. Overall Alba is not as good as Neutragena Mineral and may not even be as good a value since I can often find Neutragena on sale.

I much prefer sunscreens like Vanicream or Elta-MD that have zinc but they are not pure mineral sunscreens. That is fine with me since I don't think there is enough research to prove that chemical sunscreens are dangerous. I have had several skin cancers removed so I am more concerned about using sunscreen consistently. Since I don't always want to look like a zombie except maybe when I exercise (even then the neighbors give me looks) I prefer sunscreens like the Elta, Cera-Ve AM and Vanicream that contain some chemicals with zinc. Still I am searching for that elusive cheap, non-whitening, chemical sunscreen!
