Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This is the sixth in the series by Delacorta (ne Daniel Odier) that includes Diva , basis of the film. Now the hero, Serge Gorodish, and Lolita-like Alba play together at home in his Golden Pagoda on a California beach--but their idyll ends when Serge is arrested for littering. While he's in jail, Alba drives a blind youth, Jason, in a stolen car to the Mojave desert and the hideout of The Group. The members, male Wise Ones and their female Wisette, are crooks stealing from Jason and others they pretend to help in this gravely funny, unpredictable tale. Luckily for Alba and Jason, Serge is released and on his way, arriving in time to save the day during the showdown with the charlatans. Juxtaposing silliness, erotica, reality and surrealism, the Swiss author reinforces his reputation for creating unique, pop adventures.

From Library Journal

Wealthy, imaginative French musician Serge Gorodish and 14-year-old nymphette Alba inhabit a beach pagoda in California. A secretive band of blind people known as the Group interrupts their happiness, however, when it attempts to steal Alba away and set her up as a virgin deity of the Sphinx. From erotic, spacy, and ethereal to more than a bit bizarre, Delacorta's plot calls for raised eyebrows, fractured logic, and ruptured credibility. Some interesting, weird characters, but not much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of Delacortas Gorodish and Alba stories., September 15, 1998

This review is from: Alba (Paperback)
Out of the 6 books Delacorta has written starring Serge Gorodish and Alba, this is one of the best. The first few chapters dont make a lot of sense if you havent read Vida, but at about chapter 4 you have trouble putting it down. The reason for Gorodish being sent to prison was hilarious, I thought. Its worth reading the book just for its ending, which Im not going to tell >=D You have to read it yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars I hated it, October 9, 2009
This review is from: Alba (Paperback)
I hated this book. It was as though he took the names Alba & Gorodish & built completely new & bizarre characters. Instead of an undercurrent of a taboo sexual chemistry - they are all over each other; drinking & drugging. They are supposed to be super con men - when are they going to mastermind a job? Alba wasn't even a kleptomaniac in this edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but there are only FIVE Gorodish & Alba tales, January 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Alba (Paperback)
Correcting a minor error in the previous review, there are only 5 of these delightful little books that belong back in print, possibly as a single volume (in order):
Nana, Luna, Diva, Lola(initially released as Rock) and Vida, the last and weakest, coming in the wake of the movie version of Diva which kept the basic plot but absolutely none of the spirit of the books.

I love the books and the movie, *but* they are two completely different animals. The books are, as described by Delacorta 'fairytales for adults' while the movie is an incredible journey in which Gorodish becomes the omnicient if not omnipotent mystical guardian of Alba (transformed into a Vietnamese orphan of all things) Jules and recording-shy opera star Cynthia.
