Book Description

Oxfam Country Profiles Series April 1, 2000
The Albania Country Profile skillfully unravels the historical and political background to the present situation in Albania. Despite the advent of democracy in 1992, Albanians have found it hard to participate fully in the building of a new society. The volatility of regional politics in the Balkans, and the absence of a democratic culture, have hindered economic and social progress.

Much of this Country Profile is told in the voices of Albanians themselves: people imprisoned under the communist regime of Enver Hoxha; students who took part in political protests in the 1990s; villagers who have held on to traditional identities, and women active in setting up social-action groups.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Country briefs are usually full of useful statistics and not much else... This series is an exception. Its context is the issues that affect the poor, and, since the poor are the majority in developing countries, the overviews it offers are particularly relevant. New Scientist.Possibly the most valuable contribution made by Oxfam's flourishing Country Profiles series is to remind us of the diversities too often obscured by generalisation ... These Country Profiles would add flesh and blood to the austerities of development studies at A-level and beyond. Michael Storm, TES.

This review is from: Albania (Oxfam Country Profiles Series) (Paperback)
If you are truly devoted into learning about Albania, this book might be a bit of a disappointment. But, if you really have to have it, don't expect too gain much out of it. If you really want to learn about Albania, its people, culture, history, and politics you should then look at some of the other titles on Albania that Amazon has in stock. This book does not have much valuable insight on Albania. The book for the most part is very brief and gives the reader just a quick introduction on the country. Even with that, the brief introduction on Albania or the profile that is presented for the country is not very good. I would not even recommend this book for elementary school students. Save your money and find something else!
