Editorial Reviews

Review

“This history of the two provides a powerful assessment of how the designs changed German aerial combat abilities in a pick for any World War I collection.” ―The Midwest Book Review (April 2013)

“The author covers factory and license-built aircraft with ... thoroughness, clarifying differences with reader-friendly texts and crisp, clear charts. His operational history of the Albatros D.I and D.II (as well as transition to the D.III) draws on excellent fi rst-person and other narratives. Jim Miller has 'mined' photos from distinguished collectors for this book and his U.K. artist colleagues supported his efforts with fi ne color 'action' and detail views. The Albatros D.I 'phantom' view is particularly noteworthy. This book is an excellent treatment of an important early combat aircraft and is highly recommended.” ―Over the Front (Summer 2013)

“...another superb title in the Air Vanguard series and like the others, includes a large two page foldout cutaway of the D.II at the end of the book. A superb reference and a fine read as well. One I can easily recommend to you.” ―Scott Van Aken, www.modelingmadness.com (February 2013)

This slim volume packs in an enormous amount of information about a revolutionary development in the history of fighter aircraft. The author manages to include a concise history of aircraft development during WWI and a detailed account of the engine and airframe of the Albatros design. He covers the operational history too in a short but fascinating section which contains many first hand accounts from both sides of the rapidly developing air war. There are a few color profiles and many excellent period photographs: my only complaint is that a lot of these are reproduced at not much more than postage stamp size which severely detracts from their value. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful introduction to this important fighter. If you are interested in the first war in the air, you should buy this book.

The book is a great reference guide. I especially liked the description of the Albatros's history and construction details. The photos and art work enhanced the appeal of the book.

Aero historian James F. Miller has been focusing his research on WWI aviation and this volume from the Osprey Publishing Air Vanguard series is a well-researched profile of the Albatros DI and DII scout fighter planes which succeeded the Fokker Eindecker fighter plane. The black and white photos are fabulous, many, I hadn't seen before! I highly recommend this volume as well as Albatros DIII which is due out in March of 2014.Albatros D.III: Johannisthal, OAW and Oeffag variants (Air Vanguard). Also of potential interest is the Osprey Duel series titles by James F. Miller: DH 2 vs Albatros D I/D II: Western Front 1916 (Duel). and. FE 2b/d vs Albatros Scouts: Western Front 1916-17 (Duel)

Lots of good information about the model progression, just wished there were more pictures and closer details. I realize that's hard to accomplish with WW1 photos. Very interesting read however and I am pleased to have added this to my library.
