Limited to 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist, each signed by the artist. Often wryly funny and just as smart, Albert Oehlen's paintings play the medium for all it's worth. After an early realization that the so-called death of painting actually freed his enthusiasm as to the number of aspects through which one could expand painting, Oehlen, got to work on a wide variety of figurative and non-objective offerings, in what he has called his post-non-representational art. In his most recent work group Oehlen expands painting through the use of blatant advertising posters whose in-your-face aesthetics he transforms with subtle brushwork. Never without a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor, his work seems to be winking at us as it dares us to change the way we look at an image. Klaus Kertess throws a light on the years from 1988 onwards, when Oehlen saw himself self-consciously as a painter and started his first abstract works, then continued to probe the limits of the medium.

About the Author

Albert Oehlen is a contemporary German artist. His art concentrates on painting, installations and music. Closely associated with the Cologne art scene along with Martin Kippenberger among others, his work is related to the "Neue Wilde" movement. Oehlen comes to painting and art media out of the 70s interest in democratizing high art which allows him to view painting for example, as he says, "with a certain disdain, or at least a lack of respect. So I can romp around in it. And now that I'm having fun with it, I can take its pstualtes very seriously." Book designer and editor Hans Werner Holzwarth started as a typographer and communication designer, then co-led his own company for corporate design. Since 1992, Holzwarth has focused on book design, collaborating with Larry Clark, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Boris Mikhailov, Issey Miyake, Albert Oehlen, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Kiki Smith, Juergen Teller, Jeff Wall, John Waters, Christopher Wool, and many others. His many titles for TASCHEN include Taschen Collection, Martin Kippenberger, and Jeff Koons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Albert Oehlen, January 5, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Albert Oehlen (Paperback)
This is not a book but rather a group of folded pages which have either been reprinted by the dealer or put out as a handout or catalog. Do not be mislead. They are a series of large posters folded in the middle. Which is ok if that is what you think you are buying but a bit pricy for what you get. The reproduction quality is good, nevertheless. The sellers are also suspect they kept changing the delivery date and when I complained they kept giving me the round around. Even now when I am complaining about the not-a-book deal, they have asked me to write the same thing over 2x. I would never order from these people again, and I would advise caution to others. Albert Oehlen
