If you read and loved Albert Payson Terhune's "Lad: a Dog" books as a child, this slender volume (61 pages) for children, published in 1936, will become a cherished collectible. The canine etchings by Diana Thorne actually have nothing to do with the ten short essays, but are charming in their own right.

The true dog stories from Terhune's pen are as follows:

"Bud: The Collie with a Sixth Sense"--An American variation of "Lassie Come Home."

"Dragon: The Dog that Fought a Duel"--Dragon, the poodle brings the murderer of his master to justice.

"Shrdlu: The `Pi-Hound' of Nine News Bulletins"--A Pointer makes her home in a Kansas newsroom and produces fifteen pups.

"Treve: The Strangest Dog"--Terhune also wrote a novel about his collie, Sunnybank Sigurd (his kennel name was `Treve'), one of the quirkiest dogs he ever owned.

"Clarkso: A `Double Heroine' Eskimo Dog"--Clarkso saves her mistress's life twice in one hour.

"Fluffy: The Spitz Heroine of a Queer Melodrama"--Fluffy is stolen away from her little mistress, who is desperately ill with pneumonia.

"Red Dog: The Mysterious Visitor of Zoar"--An Ohio farmer tames a wild red dog.

"Jack: A Hero, A Thief, A Mascot, An Adventurer"--A Dalmatian, the mascot of Hook and Ladder Company 105 in Brooklyn, New York, accompanies his masters into burning buildings.

"Boots: The Setter that Served a Jail Sentence"--A faithful Gordon Setter serves a jail sentence with her master.

"Gelert: The King's Hound"--Gelert saves his master's baby from a wolf.
