This is an excellent introduction to the works of one of the greatest French composers of the 20th century. It originated as a PhD thesis, and an academic bias is discernable, mostly in the depth of the musical analyses and the emphasis on the music rather than the man. Nonetheless, the book isn't just for academics -- it's easy to read and entertaining.The only major problem with the book is its age (early 60's).
