As an ardent fan of the EastEnders (and also born in the East End of London) I was looking forward to reading "Albert Square & Me" a collection of interviews compiled and edited by Larry Jaffee from the Walford Gazette, a newspaper devoted to the long-running English TV series Eastenders (also broadcast in the U.S.). Although I had read these interviews before, some were many years ago and long forgotten so, from the two Forewards, the first interview with June Brown (Dot Cotton), to the last interview with Derek Martin (Derek Slater), and, yes, even the Epilogue - I was totally hooked. In some instances it brought tears to my eyes. I felt as if I had come across a "memoir" of family and friends and was eager to be back into their lives. If you are an EastEnder follower you will love it and, if you have never seen the EastEnders I believe, after reading the book you would want to be introduced to the series. Enjoy, as I didAlbert Square & Me: The Actors of EastEnders!

Albert Square & Me, by Larry Jaffee the editor of the Walford Gazette, is a must for EastEnders fans. The volume consists of interviews he, Tim Wilson and Dan Abramson conducted over a seventeen-year period with actors from the famous BBC soap opera which is so highly praised and revered in America. For individuals who never subscribed to the Walford Gazette, this volume will be a new-found treasure, and for those who have, you will now have all the interviews in one handy location. As one American PBS station after another drops this expensive show from their offerings, it is even more crucial that someone like Larry Jaffee seeks to create an historical record.

I am always looking for information about the Eastenders. I am pretty sure I have seen every episode from the very beginning intorduced by Tracy Ulman. I think that was about 25 years ago. I bought my first VCR so I could tape the 2 episodes weekly broadcast at 11 PM and 11:30 Sunday evening. If you are an Eastender fan, this is a must have. It is the best I have found telling the on-going saga of the many lives on The Square. If you know a better one, let me know. P.S. I think we in America are about 8 or 9 years behind England (where it is still producing new tri-weekly stories) so that leaves many, many more things to happen and people to meet on Albert Square, in the Queen Vic, and on the stalls.

Born & raised in England I've been a fan since Den kicked in the door in episode 1. When we moved to USA I grieved over not being able to keep up with Albert Square. Thank God I was wrong ... even though the episodes here are still in 2004 I also watch the new episodes on you tube. This book was a great read & only took 1 or 2 days to finish as I didn't want to put it down. So interesting to get to know the characters. Definitly worth buying & adding it to my "shrine" :)
