Reminding her recordings for Philips, January 26, 2010
This review is from: Albinoni: 8 Concertos (Audio CD)
I must start confess being Michala Petri fan: I have almost all her recordings and enjoyed specially the period she made recordings for Philips. I had some hesitations with this cd, perhaps having read some negative reviews how music is not extraordinary and how she plays these not-so-well known concertos half-asleep. I am happy I got eventually courage to buy also this one, finding that my fears of mediocrite quality have nothing to do with this highly enjoyable recording.
If you liked her Naudot, Sammartini, Vivaldi, Marcello, Telemann etc concertos for Philips, many found in box
The Art of the Recorder: this is a cd for you. I very highly appreciate Ms Petri's skill to make music sound natural, effortless, filled with humble joy of playing. There is not place for surficiality or cheap sentimentality. She is virtuoso of her instrument serving this pleasant music in a best possible way. I had not heard these concertos before: all are same typical pattern: Allegro-Adagio-Allegro, usually 2-3 minutes per movement. Program is selection of 8 concertos from Op 7 and Op 9. I think both opus have 12 concertos. Included here are Op 7: Nos 3, 6, 9, 12 and Op 9: Nos 2, 5, 8 and 11. Claudio Scimone with I Solisti Veneti seem to enjoy their Nordic soloist and do excellent work. This is mutual music-making in the best sense.
I listened easily this whole cd right away against my plans to pick 2-3 concertos. Sound quality is airy, pleasing mellow but you can enjoy details and high skill of players. Balance between sound of soloist and ensemble is excellent. But if you want to hear every note of cembalo, this is not the cd for you. Acoustically fine recording place is Palazzo Giusti in Padua, Italy.
This is music of Albinoni without any audible reference to the famous Adagio, but I can recommend you to sample the 2nd track of CD, Adagio of op 7 no 3 concerto: marvellous music that make you to concentrate on listening. Or try fast track 22, first movement of Op 9 No 11 concerto, or track 21, finale of G minor concerto Op 9 No 8: outstanding.
