Book Description

February 18, 2003

Albrecht Dürer is the most significant and admired artist of the northern Renaissance. Tracing his work and influence from his earliest career to his powerful posthumous role within German culture, this richly illustrated book surveys all of the artist's best-known prints as well as numerous drawings and watercolors.

The catalogue of a greatly anticipated exhibition of Dürer's work in England--including loans of many precious works rarely seen by the public--the volume features 85 color and 267 black-and-white illustrations. It follows Dürer's career from his first work in the medieval tradition of Martin Schongauer, through his Italian education in the classical tradition, to his sophisticated development of the woodcut and engraving techniques that changed the history of printmaking. The book examines Dürer's long-lived influence, from the obsession of artists and collectors with his work during the late sixteenth century to the iconic status he acquired amid the rise of German nationalism in the nineteenth. It considers how the popularity of his images migrated into a range of materials as diverse as porcelain and banknotes. This assessment of his art and legacy concludes with a contemplation of Dürers famous print, Melancholia, written by the Nobel Prize-winning German novelist Günter Grass, himself a printmaker.

Offering a much-needed fresh look at the work of a major Renaissance artist, this handsome book is certain to deepen the broad international appreciation that Dürer's work already enjoys.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When Renaissance humanists in the north set out to elevate Germany's reputation in eyes of the cultured world (Germans had long been considered "savage drunkards...responsible for the destruction of ancient Rome"), Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) seemed to be "a natural candidate to represent the visual side of this cultural revival in the north," argues German Renaissance scholar Bartrum. Within a few pages, one can see why. Dürer's images of animals and angels, as well as his ongoing task of self-portraiture, remain accomplishments of the highest artistic order, at once technically incredible and emotionally deep. This copiously illustrated, exhaustively annotated catalogue for a new show at the British Museum examines the entirety of Dürer's career, along with his diverse posthumous legacy in mediums from porcelain to banknotes. Perhaps the most significant artist of the Northern Renaissance (this catalogue is confident of the fact), Dürer emerges not only as a master draftsman, printmaker, even watercolorist, but also a charismatic friend and booster of the German arts. 85 color plates, 267 b&w illustrations.

Review

In the early 1500s, Dürer was 'Europe's most famous living artist.' . . . [T]he reverence for the German in the sixteenth century and beyond gives the show its basic theme: his enduring influence. . . The enthusiastic reception the artist inspired, and the way that different generations have made him their own, is also the central concern of the beautifully illustrated catalogue. -- Times Literary Supplement

Sure to become a standard reference source on the graphic art of Albrecht Dürer. . . . [An] impressive publication. -- Choice

This is a very nice compilation by my wife's favorite artist. The book features a cross-section of different media that were employed by Albrecht Durer. The text nicely complements the abundance of included photo reproductions of the stunning works produced by this phenomenal artist.

This review is from: Albrecht Dürer and His Legacy: The Graphic Work of a Renaissance Artist (Hardcover)
I bought this book after seeing a spectacular exhibit of Durer's work in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It was one of those events where you wished you could just study the artistry of the pictures for hours. So, I decided to get a book that I could study for hours. The book is really good, but it doesn't take the place of the real thing...I guess the detail of the photography can't capture the reality of the works, but it is close and it still is awe inspiring and there is a lot of great historical background on the pieces. I'm glad I bought the book.
