4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations; fairly esoteric text., May 14, 1999
By A Customer
I still have my original, well-worn, copy from my days as a horse-crazed pre-adolescent. I remember looking at the illustrations for hours, memorizing every detail of each breed pictured. I don't recall ever reading the text however, and now as an adult who is reading it to my horse-crazed six-year-old girl, I know why! While the descriptions of the various breeds are extremely well-written, it is definitely for older children and adults (if it is to be fully understood and appreciated). There is a lot of fascinating history, chronicalling the very beginnings of many of the breeds but the language and vocabulary is sophisticated and rather esoteric in its tone. And while I can appreciate it now, I certainly understand why I was less than enthusiastic about reading the lengthy text as a youngster.

Nevertheless, The Album of Horses is, and will always be, the definitive volume on the breeds of horses with which we are most familiar. It's a classic!

This review is from: Album of Horses (Paperback)
The Album of Horses is a really great book. I read it a long time ago, but I still remember how Marguerite Henry described every detail of the Arabian, the courageous story of the Morgan, and especially about Misty, the Chincoteague pony.Margurite is my favorite author, I've read all of her books. Also, the Album of Horses makes a great horse reference book. I LOVE IT AND MARGUERITE AND MISTY AND EVERYTHING ABOUT HER! And it should really be 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001 stars, not only 5!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, October 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Album of Horses (Paperback)
I have always loved this book, even when I was just beginning to read. The text and illustations are marvelous. I love the way the author gave a story about every breed, besides telling basic facts about each horse. The pictures bring out the story and are very good. All in all, I'd say this is one of the best horse books out there for any age horselovers!
