Beautiful illustrations; fairly esoteric text.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Album of Horses ( Pop-Up ) (Hardcover)
I still have my original, well-worn, copy from my days as a horse-crazed pre-adolescent. I remember looking at the illustrations for hours, memorizing every detail of each breed pictured. I don't recall ever reading the text however, and now as an adult who is reading it to my horse-crazed six-year-old girl, I know why! While the descriptions of the various breeds are extremely well-written, it is definitely for older children and adults (if it is to be fully understood and appreciated). There is a lot of fascinating history, chronicalling the very beginnings of many of the breeds but the language and vocabulary is sophisticated and rather esoteric in its tone. And while I can appreciate it now, I certainly understand why I was less than enthusiastic about reading the lengthy text as a youngster. Nevertheless, The Album of Horses is, and will always be, the definitive volume on the breeds of horses with which we are most familiar. It's a classic!

The Album of Horses is a really great book. I read it a long time ago, but I still remember how Marguerite Henry described every detail of the Arabian, the courageous story of the Morgan, and especially about Misty, the Chincoteague pony.Margurite is my favorite author, I've read all of her books. Also, the Album of Horses makes a great horse reference book. I LOVE IT AND MARGUERITE AND MISTY AND EVERYTHING ABOUT HER! And it should really be 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001 stars, not only 5!

I have always loved this book, even when I was just beginning to read. The text and illustations are marvelous. I love the way the author gave a story about every breed, besides telling basic facts about each horse. The pictures bring out the story and are very good. All in all, I'd say this is one of the best horse books out there for any age horselovers!

Marguerite Henry makes learning about horses a joy in this book. The illustrations by Wesley Dennis are just wonderful. Having been a horse crazy girl long ago, I can say that this would be a hit for any little girl who loves horses. This is a book that both adults and children can enjoy together.

As a youth and as an adult I enjoyed this book very much.,

I first read this book when I was 12 years old. I totally enjoyed it. Even now it is a pleasure to sit down with it. Although it does have age recommendations it is a book a young person who does not read can also enjoy because of the wonderful illustrations by Mr. Dennis. I still have my copy from childhood and have purchased copies for other young people and will continue to do so. I have at this time one ordered from a local book store for a girl who is "challenged". Although she can't read and her attention span at this time is fairly short this is a book I know she will get a lot of pleasure from.

Made me horse-crazy,

My mother read me this book before I could read. Just looking at the beautiful illustrations connected me to the beauty of horses. After I did learn to read, I read the book many, many times & still marvel at the illustrations. I still have the book, along with 12 horses, & am going to give the book to my 3-year old niece, so her mother can read it to her.

Loved it as a kid and still do!,

I remember coming across this book in my school library when I was about 10 or 11 and being enchanted with Wesley Dennis' beautiful paintings, as well as the little stories Mrs. Henry told of each breed. Some are condensations of her other books, like Misty of Chincoteague and King of the Wind. Very informative, as they don't simply tell you dry facts but bring each breed to life in the context of a particular time and place. Definitely recommend it & any of Mrs. Henry's books to horse-crazy kids or adults!
