mtx switched up their trade mark pop punk style for this album, but it still has the biting lyrics of dr frank and the pop rock style sounds great and a perfect evolution of the band standout tracks are "we'll get by", "hey emily", and "we're not no one". this record is a must have for those interested in the evolution of early to mid-nineties pop punk bands such as the queers, sicko, screeching weasel, green day, and of course, mtx

MTX without the punk,

I'm a big fan of the Mr. T Experience; with smart and funny lyrics, great pop hooks and a likeable punk guitar sound, MTX is one of the three great pop-punk bands of the last 20 years (The Queers and Screeching Weasel being the other two). All of the MTX albums leading up to ALCATRAZ are great punk albums, and if you're new to MTX, start with their best (LOVE IS DEAD, ...AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM, or REVENGE IS SWEET, AND SO ARE YOU). ALCATRAZ is an entirely different type of album, retaining the pop but dropping the punk. The songs are still fun to listen to and memorable, the guitar-based pop/rock hooks are still there, but now there's more variety. Think NRBQ crossed with early Elvis Costello, but sometimes sounding like Nirvana, Screaming Trees or even the Spin Doctors. I was used to the punk version of MTX, so ALCATRAZ took me 2-3 listens before I started to really like it. It really is a great album.
