Gr 4-8-Oliver discusses the early history of the island as a settlement, fort, and lighthouse; its years as a military and federal prison; the claims of Native Americans on the island in the 1960s and `70s; and as a top tourist attraction today. There is some fascinating information on the institution's use in the 20th century as a prison, including a day in the life of an inmate, accounts of failed escapes, descriptions of some of the famous residents such as Al Capone and Robert "Birdman" Stroud, and even some criticism of harsh prison operations. Occasional black-and-white photographs, some of poor quality, illustrate the text. This title is well researched and documented. Great for reports as well as for leisure reading.-Andrew Medlar, Chicago Public Library, IL

CHILDREN, Great Read,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Alcatraz Prison (In American History) (Library Binding)
This is a great book for kids if they're interested in Alcatraz. It has everything from when it was discovered till now. Its only weak spot is details about escape(wich I'm really interested in). Otherwise, it has great details, and a very descriptive book for children!!
