Gr 5-8 Steins begins with a definition of alcoholism and a checklist of questions to determine if someone has a potential abuse problem. Specific attention is given to the disease's short- and long-term effects on a family. The author addresses the physical effects of alcohol on young people, and discusses peer pressure and drinking and driving. Interesting and thought-provoking coverage is given to the psychological effect of advertising; the ineffectiveness of anti-alcohol campaigns such as Prohibition; film and television portrayals of the alcoholic personality; and a final emphasis placed on the need to take personal responsibility for one's own behavior. Various treatment methodologies are outlined. A final chapter is devoted to individual and family counseling opportunities, intervention programs, and addresses and phone numbers of support organizations. A mix of black-and-white and glossy full-color photographs appear throughout the accessible, attractive, and readable presentation. This title is a stepping stone to more complex and detailed books such as Nancy Nielsen's Teen Alcoholism (Lucent, 1990), Herma Silverstein's Alcoholism (Watts, 1990), Margaret Hyde's Alcohol (Enslow, 1988), Susan & Daniel Cohen's A Six Pack and a Fake I.D. (M. Evans, 1985), and Alan Lang's Alcohol (Chelsea, 1992). Celia A. Huffman, Worthington Public Library,
